TWO TRIBES by Emily Bowen Cohen does a great job with the emotions of a kid caught between two cultures. Her mom is mad at her dad which complicates things. The adults aren’t as well drawn, but they are only there to affirm Mia’s emotional, Jewish, and Muscogee journeys. #bookaday
Two Tribes
In her poignant debut graphic novel inspired by her own life, Emily Bowen Cohen embraces the complexity, meaning, and deep love that comes from being part of two vibrant tribes. Mia is still getting used to living with her mom and stepfather, and to the new role their Jewish identity plays in their home. Feeling out of

It’s risky when authors tone shift in a series, but when well done it’s very powerful. A FOOL AND HIS HONEY is the Aurora Teagarden I don’t zip through on the reread, and I always wonder about the Doylist reasons for the plot, but it works for me on an emotional level #bookaday

Jane Yolen’s SISTER LIGHT SISTER DARK is about storytelling, who gets to tell the stories and which stories are remembered, and what it means to be a true story. It’s also about a chosen one who doesn’t want the job, about numinous sisters, about gender in society and academia. #bookaday

I had a lot of fun reading Lisa Jobe’s CAN I KEEP IT, and then a kindergartener showed up at Reading Buddies to share it with me. We were both very impressed by the boy’s trapping skills and loved tracing the cat back to first pages. #bookaday

#SwordandLaser picked a spooky October read with Brom’s SLEWFOOT. It leaned pretty hard into the gory for my sensitive eyeballs but I made it through to the end. The glowing illustrations in my copy made several hesitant bookclub members decide to belatedly read it. #bookaday

Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.Connecticut, 1666: An anc...

A great local Seattle story is @byharryconnolly.bsky.social ’s A KEY, AN EGG, AN UNFORTUNATE REMARK. It has a mystery, a bad-ass old lady, her veteran nephew, a full hand of baddies, many with opposing purposes, and perhaps the best fictional dragon since Smaug. #bookaday

Today is the release day for my new urban fantasy novel, a standalone called A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark. It’s a pacifist urban fantasy; in a genre where violent asskickers act as th…

The podcast Even the Trunchbull recommended THE THREE ROBBERS. So I read it to a kid at the library. She was disturbed by the kidnapping but fascinated by the art and the story and ended up taking it home. The circle of recommendations continues. #bookaday

THE DAWN OF EVERYTHING by the David’s Graeber & Wengrow is great at asking questions and questioning assumptions. I hope I manage to untag so much stuff that everyone knows as unproven now. Or at least push it all in with CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR facts. #bookaday

Serendipity! Listening to @adapalmer.bsky.social ’s Beforecast just before reading Louis Sachar’s THE MAGICIAN OF TIGER CASTLE was a great way to really sink into an imaginary Renaissance Italian country. Also I think Ada would really enjoy talking to Anatole. #bookaday

Reading Susanna Morris’s biography of Octavia Butler, POSITIVE OBSESSION, was eye-opening because I’ve always considered her an incredibly amazing author, and yet she struggled for a long time and had to work hard to maintain confidence. It’s both reassuring and heartbreaking. #bookaday

LITTLE FUZZY has faith in frontier justice, the eternal pleasure of cigarettes and cocktail hours, and the feminine dream of keeping house. It has a working lie detector but no cell phones. This future didn’t seem plausible by the time FUZZY NATION came along. #bookaday

Bookclub is comparing @scalzi.com ’s FUZZY NATION with LITTLE FUZZY, proving the adage “science fiction is about the present, not the future.“ Both are fun, and the way corporations and the law are seen to have evolved, and the attitudes towards aliens and the police are great mirrors. #bookaday

Sylvia Plath’s ARIEL is a collection of tiny shards. Some catch the light and throw off colors everywhere, others pinch into your skin and ache like splinters. I don’t think I’ll save any for night time repeating to slide into a dream. #bookaday

The POETRY TEATIME COMPANION is theoretically a collection to share with kids over some nice snacks. My kids were loudly allergic to poetry and probably wouldn’t have come near even for cake. But it’s nice to dream of sharing these with kids, even if some seem a little high-falutin. #bookaday

What makes @roanparrish.bsky.social ’s THE HAUNTING OF EDGAR LOVEJOY cosy is that when people do the things self help books encourage, it works. In the real world, people go off script and react unpredictably. So the fantasy part isn’t the ghosts, it’s the idea that things work out. #bookaday
