I took this photo at BookExpo in 2015: Gloria Steinem signed advance copies of her book My Life on the Road. There was a long line of booksellers eager to meet her, and she took the time to engage with every one.

The longest line I ever saw for a signing at Bookexpo was when her memoir was coming out
End of an era.

Met Wendy & Richard Pini of @elfquest.bsky.social while tearing down my booth at BookExpo 2000 in Chicago. Stumbled thru an appreciative thanks; I already had all the books they were packing up
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

BookExpo 1999, tired & having torn down our booth, wandering the empty floor. Stumbled across kind Wendy and Richard from @elfquest.bsky.social packing up, also exhausted. I stammered out how their work helped me thru being on my own, they offered me books & I said no b/c I already owned them. 😵‍💫

I can’t believe that something like 20 years after picking up this tchotchke at BookExpo America… I still have it. This was a debut novel in the early 2000s and the guy who wrote it had a whole booth just hanging out free stuff.

I haven't read it but maybe now I should. Kelly still takes the piss because I wanted to hire a Segway for BookExpo one year. Figured it would get us lots of attention. Now I want (I do not) want to hire one of these for some book show. Sorry, killing myself laughing over here

Whenever I see announcements like that, I think of Scott Turrow bringing everyone down to earth at BookExpo one year, pointing out that publishing is a business [and not, per the context of the conversation, the savior of democracy].

This is a good illustration of why I’m telling people that I’ll be in NY *during* BookExpo, not *for* BookExpo.

I actually have such a mishmash of HG. I have the ARC versions of Hunger as we had a bookstore when that came out and we got it at BookExpo, paperback Catching Fire and Mockingjay, and now hardback Ballad and Sunrise. 😭

Thinking back reminded me that I met Neil at the BookExpo in LA in 2003, and I thought it must have been at about this time year. I just looked it up, and it was *exactly* 20 years ago today. 😁

We got a sneak preview of The Day I Swapped My Dad for Goldfish. Good times.

The return of BookCon underlines one of the greatest transformations in book publishing in last 10 yrs. It's more author/indie- and consumer-driven than ever before. BookCon can succeed and grow; industry-facing BookExpo remains dead as a doornail.
