Moving my #booksof2023 thread to Bluesky, which I guess means I've committed to this place? There will be a duplicate thread over on the Xitter.

#Book 48 of 2023 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It has taken me years to finish this. Very interesting, informative but very high-brow. I have got the next two in the series but might leave it a while before I attempt them #BooksOf2023 #bookstagram 💙📚

Poverty, By America by Matthew Desmond. A provocative question: who benefits from US poverty? The answer is multilayered and complex, touching on race, health, land, gender and all the intersections in between. Great research, but would benefit from more narratives. #booksof2023

Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap. Nothing new if you already know basic personal finance advice. But the focus on women’s empowerment and acknowledgment of structural inequality in wealth is a refreshing departure. #booksof2023

Amazon in Exile by Elizabeth Salo. Very cool blend of romance genre with well-researched Greek mythology Fantastic pacing; suffers a bit from characters telling each other more than they should. #booksof2023

Books of 2023. Elizabeth Hand has written one of two great haunted house novels in A Haunting on the Hill. Too good to do anything predictable, she delivers a follow on to The Haunting of Hill House you won't forget. #Booksof2023
A Haunting on the Hill

My #booksof2023. I did actually make it to 20 (my annual reading goal for non-work related books)! Book no.20 (no separate post): A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin - not entirely my cup of tea (couldn't resist), but I enjoyed the tea-infused magic & will read the 2nd part soonish. 💙📚

On Critical Race Theory by @victorerikray.bsky.social
If CRT is an “intellectual bulwark against the propaganda of history” (129), this book is the needed door in the wall, making the theory accessible and clear. Short chapters make he knowledge easy to use and share. #booksof2023 #reread

The Secret Hours by Mick Herron

Another great spy story, featuring some of the Slough House regulars, but not as you know them…

Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner. While the multiple POVs were intriguing and increased suspense, this one ultimately fell short due to its overly-pat ending which failed to deliver on the experiences of anyone but the main protagonist. #booksof2023

The Last Caretaker, by Jessica Strawser. A little slower to get off the ground than some of Strawser's others, but delivers with excellent twists at the end. Some really, really fun characters in this one; I could read a whole separate book just on Dottie. #booksof2023

Big Summer, by Jennifer Weiner. Not her best work. Still full of fun characters, but the influencer culture commentary fell a little flat and the mystery had too much happen offstage and wasn’t as compelling as it could have been. #booksof2023
