There are still many limitations to using `mask`. I believe improving `border-shape` is the better approach; we can use `border-shape` directly to define icon shapes, and it allows us to apply borders or `box-shadow` easily and elegantly.

The border is split into white on the top & black on the bottom. Behind both swans are walls with a tile pattern of black 8 point stars lined in white on a grey background framing an empty space doorway is shaded wall moulding.

then make a folder for the hair, and add every layer for the shading/rendering inside the folder as an alpha mask, and you can't paint further than your base, PLUS the border lines still show up, cuz it's all withing the base shape.

For SVGs with remote URLs, it might be worth considering introducing `url()` for `border-shape`, which would also maintain consistency with `clip-path()`.

A few more of the windows at Saint Pois.
Another long slender romanesque arch, with square red and lavender and pink border and primarily gold and blue, green and orange within. There is also a little coat of arms in the middle, what I think is a crescent moon on its back under something, gold against dark blue, and a line of red and gold across the top. In the foreground is the silhouetted confessional booth (I think) with its hella pointy roofs. Another window of the same shape, this time with a border of yellow, citrtine and faded orange ssquares, andinside, shades of blue squares and a couple of pictures, but all I can see from here are gesticulating people in shades of red and green Another similar shape window, with a vertical border of deep reds and wine pueples, and again those tetris-looking squares of of blues with notes of lime green and yellow. This is entirely abstract The door to the porch, made of dark wood. In front of it a diagonal band of splashes of yellow, pale blue and red light fall on the grey stone font. In the alcove above the door, Jesus reclines in the lap of his mother.
