#borrowedframes

There are others.
Drivers in tall hats;
A man dressed in white,
carrying a stepladder;
Another man, crossing the street,
hunched against the rain;
A woman on the kerb, in an apron.

If they pass each other,
they'll nod. A wry smile, maybe.
They're telling each other
soon.
Soon.

i'll go first:
she takes it to the window
so the room won't see her face
when it says the thing
she already knew. #borrowedframes

She remembers a time she couldn't read:
her innocent inheritance, indecipherable.
Over time she's learned to recognise
these strange marks, their meaning.
She can say them out loud, if she dares,
pronounce the words an incantation.
She hesitates. Spell it out—
all magic has a price.
