Digging through an abandoned WIP I haven't looked at in ages... but didn't someone ask for one-sided BoruMitsu longing?

“Boruto, a messenger snake I sent to Sarada’s office yesterday reported that it sensed traces of your blood in the room. If you’re still in Konoha when this message reaches you, could you let me know that you’re safe? I can’t divulge my location, but if you send a message through this snake, it’ll know where to find me.” The reptile closed its mouth for a few seconds before reopening. “I love you.”
Just what he needed: Another complicated interaction with a former team member. Guilt twisted in his gut as he finished climbing down the tree. His relationship with the White Snake Sage had always been strange since they met at the Academy, but it had become infinitely stranger in the days leading up to the war when Mitsuki had told Boruto that he was in love with him.

If that admission had been followed up by a passionate kiss or the expectation of of reciprocated romantic feelings and subsequent sexual activity, Boruto could have easily brushed off the whole thing with a “Hey, sorry, but I’m not into that,” but Mitsuki had made it clear that his devotion came without the desire for physical closeness or a formal relationship. Mitsuki was just in love with him and Boruto didn’t really know what to do with that information so he hadn’t done anything.
Well, that wasn’t entirely true.
He’d pulled his bedroll next to Mitsuki’s the night after the first battle when they were seventeen and scared shitness. Sarada was helping Sakura with the wounded and Shikadai was planning their next attack. They barely even touched, except for Mitsuki’s white hair, smelling like viscera and detonated paper bombs, against his shoulder as they fell asleep, waking back-to-back the following morning to the sound of the sky being torn apart.

Time and time again during the war and after, in those long months when they spend their days pulling apart rubble to find the chakraless corpses of villagers who hadn’t gotten out alive, Boruto often found himself by the side of his pale friend, their fingers entangled as they sat alone in the dark, too haunted to be alone. More than once, he’d woken up outside a convenience store just as the sun was rising and realized he’d fallen asleep on his friend’s shoulder, a military-issue green cloak covering both their bodies.
Mitsuki had nothing to say when he started dating Sarada, but when Boruto broke up with her a few months later, he stumbled into Mitsuki’s tiny apartment and threw up in his bathroom. His friend had picked him up off the cold tiles and tucked him into his bed, curling his body against his back and stroking his hair as he sobbed. Boruto spent days in that bed with its gray sheets, watching slivers of light try to fight their way through the closed blinds as Mitsuki made sure he drank water and supplied him with endless plates of decoratively cut fruit: kiwi blossoms,

decoratively cut fruit: kiwi blossoms, strawberry roses, intricate apple fans, cantaloupe shurikens. Boruto didn’t want to eat anything, but his friend had gone through so much painstaking work that saying no was unimaginable.
When he’d finally made up his mind that he couldn’t just stay in that room, that he’d have to find a better way to die than through sadness, Mitsuki was the only one who didn’t try to talk him into staying when he quietly told his friends and family that he was going to go find his dad and Kawaki. Even Sarada had found him that last afternoon before he left, sitting on top of the destroyed faces of Hokage Rock with Mitsuki and his packed bags. She’d screamed at him when his only response to her entreaty was handing her the marred leaf headband that had belonged to her father, severing his affiliation with Konoha and with it, his promise to always be by her side. Again, it was Mitsuki who wrapped his impossibly long arms around her, holding Sarada back as he stepped through a black portal, leaving the remaining two members of Team Seven behind.
