One of my favourite old watercolours, bringing back memories of exploring the Hampshire coast by bus or train with sketch pad. This was done at beautiful Bosham in 1970 on cheap paper, catching the sun going down over Chichester harbour - see alt text

A sketchpad watercolour done from Bosham as the sun went down one evening in 1970. Not sure exactly where I sat but I think the church across the water is St Nicholas at Itchenor (the spire is a little more squat than depicted here). I think G and I were with an old friend and we went for beers in a nearby pub (the Berkeley Arms? Probably a bit too posh for scruffy arty types now). I didn't have a car then so it was bus or train plus a walk.

✨ Friday inspiration: The achingly beautiful village of Bosham in West Sussex. King Harold saw the same church tower before he set sail in 1064 to meet William of Normandy who would be his conqueror in 1066. Bosham is named in the Bayeux Tapestry alongside a depiction of the church.

The tapestry depicts the events that led up to the Norman Conquest in 1066 led by William Duke of Normandy. The battle against Harold II, King of England culminating in the Battle of Hastings Part of the tapestry depicts Harold’s Manor in Bosham, a feast at the Manor, the church in Bosham and Harold and his men sailing out of Bosham Quay in 1064 to Normandy. This is the beautiful Holy Trinity Church in Bosham. The Bosham Channel when the tide is out. Bosham is near Chichester in West Sussex. I have painted Bosham a few times in watercolour. It’s a very picturesque village. I have never seen the Bayeux Tapestry but as a child I drew pencil drawings copying from history books. I will be going to see the tapestry when it is on display at the British Museum.
