Two identical statues, one year apart. First is statue of Leif Erikssen at Brattahlid (Qassiarsuk) in Greenland, where he set out for America. 2nd is version of same statue at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, which I visited today. This marks end point of his journey #brattahlid #lanseauxmeadows

Leif Eriksson looking down over Brattahlid, the farmstead in Greenland from which he sailed to discover Vinland (part of modern Canada) in around 1000. Leif is credited with the European discovery of continental North America nearly 500 years before Columbus #greenland #leiferiksson #brattahlid

Remains of the first Christian church in North America (probably), a tiny wood &turf building. Sagas say it was built c.1000 at Brattahlid in Greenland, now Qassiarsuk.

I took this photo last August. Even in summer there were icebergs in the fjord

He did commit; it seems his corpse is in Brattahlíð near present-day Qassiarsuk. There are no grave markers; there is DNA work planned but it might be easier in the current circumstances to use a seismometer and look for rotation.

I basically pick my holiday destinations based on archaeological sites that I’d like to visit. One of the most exciting places I went this year was Qassiarsuk in Greenland, where a Norse settlement has been excavated. It’s believed to be Brattahlid, the farmstead of Erik the Red #greenland

Glad to have visited #Qassiarsuk (Brattahlíð), #Greenland, last summer. The place will be much less peaceful once the US starts to (re)build their base in #Narsarsuaq across the fjord: construction noise and air traffic. The civil airport was not busy at the time.

I love research for my novels. Research can come and bite you on the bum. My book starts in Brattahlid. Greenland was mountainous, right? So I had my protagonist climbing cliffs. Visiting Greenland, there are no bloody cliffs at Brattahlid! So, I am stuck trying to sort out an alternative.

I’ve got this dude in Dublin, a victim of the St. Brice’s Day massacre in England VK261, a Brattahlid villager from Greenland VK184, and a dude from the Faroe Islands VK46. Kinda cool knowing where the bones of my ancestors lie.

In Qassiarsuk, Greenland, Thjodhilde was a very small church built at the end of the 10th century by Erik the Red for his wife who had converted to Christianity, a wooden replica was constructed in 2000 to commemorate the millennium of the first Christian church in the territory.

Thjodhild's Church (Reconstruction), c1000
Qassiarsuk, (originally Brattahlíð), Greenland 🇬🇱

At Brattahlíð, Greenland stood the 1st Catholic Church in the Americas, built in the early 11th century by Norse settlers. A reconstruction of it is near the actual site.
