I can’t mess with voodoo ‘cause that’s cultural appropriation, but I’m all in on Holler Magic and Braucherei.
Sometimes I think I have no other options, and then I remember: voodoo.

I had never heard of Braucherei until today, but belief in it got a man murdered in 1928: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brauche...

96 years ago tonight, on November 27, 1928, a troubled trio - who believed they had been hexed by local powwow/folk magic doctor Nelson Rehmeyer - bound, beat, and murdered the man in his home in an attempt to remove the witch curse.

Think it’s usual grab-bag mysticism for half-assed pagans. Mostly hear the Sator square in relation to Braucherei—a Christian mystic tradition. Tbh, think he thinks abracadabra is palindromic, like the square.

Have ancestors from Pennsylvania who claimed Pennsylvania Dutch. What would I look for if I was looking for signs of Braucherei or folk magic coming down the generations? #genealogy #folkmagic

Practical wisdom and lore of the ancient ways have guided generations through millennia to health and spiritual connection to nature. We must honor the healers and teachers for their devotion, faith, and perseverance - often against religious and social stigma.

Also, I’m guessing you already saw the recent harper’s piece on braucherei- the author came here to lancaster and it’s so sick (aside from the idealization of the Amish therein)

As a white southerner of primarily Celtic & Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry I agree. From Appalachian folk magic & Braucherei, to Celtic & German paganism, there is so much richness in the traditions that I can rightly lay some sort of claim to, why would I want to appropriate the traditions of others?

Grandfather was a Native and highly ecumenical. I think he was just trying to get a handle on what people believed. Our family came from Appalachia so we know all about braucherei. But then again...my grandfather was a tough somabitch. Veteran of both world wars in different branches of the military
