#breadseed
I harvested some of the breadseed poppies to collect the seeds for eating. I got about 3/16 cup from 18 very small to medium pods.

I was really interested to see the variation in color, with some pods having more purpley seeds and others more blue

I did not plant any breadseed poppies in my garden this year. But I also did not pull out any breadseed poppies. So now I have a cup of poppyseeds. But what to DO with them? 🌱

Breadseed poppies reseed in pavement cracks, too, but not in flower beds.

I've now harvested all the breadseed poppy pods. I like the look in vases like this but I'll eventually collect the seeds up to eat.

I kept the four pods from the surprise pink flowers separated out for planting. I had a large-ish set of pods that were […]

Oh!

Yeah, this is "Hungarian Blue Poppies" I got from Burpee's:

www.burpee.com/poppy-hungar...

They're listed as an heirloom breadseed variety :)

This was my first year growing poppies of any kind, and I'm happy with how they turned out :)

Breadseed poppies! They make the seeds you find on poppyseed bagels, muffins etc.

They’re beautiful Papaver somniferum, aka opium poppies or breadseed poppies. the the petals have faded, showing the large, blueish seed pods that contain edible seeds you can use for baking +cooking.

We had an unusual but very welcome July rain today!
People think of Western Washington as rainy — and it is, October through May. July/August/September might see a couple cloudbursts for the whole span.
Not much accumulation, but it smells wonderful!

Full sun in all patches. They self sow and keep going year after year with no intervention from me.

That also explains why my breadseed poppies didn’t return. Next year I’ll go out and disturb the patch they were in.

Good morning!
How are you holding up?
What are you up to today?

The breadseed poppies are starting here! They are always an early-summer favorite of mine.
I have some fun variants; these are the purple/pink range (Thanks to Lauren's Purple!), and the reds are in a different bed.

Got back after a week away - tour the garden with me to see what's blooming!

These are volunteer breadseed poppies in the veggies descended from some I planted 2 years ago. The seeds are a bit tedious to collect & clean so we stopped caring & now just let a few of them grow in empty spots.

My absolute favorite color combo is bright blue with darkest purple. Difficult to achieve in the garden, but I do what I can

it looks frickin delicious. last year we grew "mouse melons" - so small, so cute! our only melon to this point.

this year, we've got flowers and smaller edibles so far (zone 8b-ish). shelling peas, sugar snaps coming in now hot & heavy & delicious - lots of greens.
