We are standing under a gigantic metal gnome. That is, he is nine metres high, or roughly 27 feet. We come up to perhaps just above his knee. We look up at him and see his torso, head and face from below. He is in a bushland clearning, and there are eucalyptus trees behind him. He wears breeches on his legs, and a tunic belted at the waist. The belt pushes up some of his belly fat, creating a muffin-top, and the smooth curve on his breast reflects more nearby trees. He is bearded and wears a thoughtful expression on his face. On his head is a Phrygian cap, as worn by Smurfs and, in ancient times, formerly enslaved people who had regained their freedom. He stands tall with his hands on his hips. Spots on his fingers and on the hem of his tunic reflect flashes of sunlight, and the deep blue sky forms a lighter haze around the outline of his hat and shoulders.

I agree. If historical fiction were just a setting, I would probably have finished my novel by now rather than spending time researching what 17th-century men wore under their breeches.
It’s creation of a world that might be completely unknown to the reader.
