The number of people on bridging visas in Australia has more than doubled in three years, reaching over 412,000 at the end of last month. This temporary visa category, used for those awaiting permanent status, now accounts for 14% of all temporary visa holders. Immigration expert Abul Rizvi attributes the surge to systemic delays in processing student and family visas, with over 54,000 rejected study visas being appealed. The backlog has complicated government efforts to reduce net overseas migration, as people remain in Australia longer with work rights. Family visa applicants face waits of 15-33 years for permanent status, while partner visa processing takes around 12 months. The situation highlights poor policy and administrative failures, with bridging visas representing a mix of both. The government's attempts to control migrant numbers have been delayed due to concerns over policy gaps.
