The Brijuni Islands of #Croatia are home to trace fossil sites. Situated in the Adriatic Sea, dinosaur footprints have been known from these islands for nearly 100 years. These ~130 million year old impressions (over 200 tracks) are protected by the Brijuni National Park. #paleontology #ichnology

Brijuni National Park 🇭🇷 protects one of Croatia's most biologically valuable marine areas, where limestone reefs, underwater caves, and seagrass meadows support a vast biodiversity. Fish abundance is 166% higher inside the park than nearby unprotected waters, with nearly 8× more fish biomass.

Croatia calls off Western Balkans summit citing incompatibility with Vučić’s recent statements
Croatia calls off Western Balkans summit citing incompatibility with Vučić’s recent statements
Croatian President Zoran Milanović has cancelled on 30 March the upcoming meeting of the Brdo-Brijuni Process, citing recent statements and actions by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić as incompatible with the initiative’s goals. The summit, originally scheduled for May on the Brijuni Islands in Croatia, was intended to bring together leaders from across Southeast Europe to foster cooperation and advance European integration. Milanović, serving as co-chair alongside Slovenian President Nataša Pirc-Musar, made the decision after concluding that conditions were not suitable for Vučić’s participation. The Brdo-Brijuni Process was launched by Croatia and Slovenia as European Union members to strengthen regional ties and accelerate the EU accession prospects of countries in the Western Balkans. Over the years, it has served as a platform for dialogue among the presidents of Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. Milanović’s office emphasized that Vučić’s political rhetoric and behavior in recent weeks have undermined interstate relations and posed risks to peace and stability in the region. In a formal written statement, the Croatian president’s cabinet declared that no appropriate conditions existed for hosting the Serbian leader. Background to the conflict Tensions between Zagreb and Belgrade have simmered for months, fueled by mutual accusations. Vučić has repeatedly claimed, without providing concrete evidence, that Croatia has been “brutally interfering” in Serbia’s internal affairs and acting as logistical support for attempts to destabilize his government. These remarks intensified after local elections in Serbia. Vučić accuses neighbors of anti-Serbian campaign and military alliance in Republika Srpska speech Additionally, Vučić criticized Croatia’s decision to bar Serbian historian Miloš Ković from entering the country, describing it as an act of “savagery” and announcing a diplomatic protest. He has also alleged the formation of a military alliance involving Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo directed against Serbia, claims that have heightened political friction. Croatian officials, for their part, have expressed concerns over Serbia’s military acquisitions, including advanced systems from China, viewing them as a potential security challenge in the region. The latest travel advisory issued by Serbia, which placed Croatia on an “orange” list of destinations to be visited only in cases of extreme necessity, added another layer of irritation. Croatian authorities responded with sarcasm, noting that Croatia ranks among Europe’s safest countries according to EU statistics and highlighting the irony of the warning amid its strong tourism appeal. Such exchanges reflect a broader pattern of diplomatic sparring that has strained bilateral relations. Vučić’s reaction and phone call with Vladimir Putin In response to the cancellation, Vučić stated that he fully supported Milanović’s decision, remarking that he had “no place” at the meeting. He suggested that it would have been better for the Croatian president to proceed with leaders from Pristina and Tirana if the goal was to maintain an “idyllic atmosphere.” Vučić added that, rather than attending the summit on the Brijuni Islands, he considered it far more important to lay a flower at the Jasenovac memorial site, a reference to the World War II concentration camp where many Serbs, along with Jews, Roma, and others, perished under the wartime Independent State of Croatia. Serbia mocks EU’s silence on Croatia’s alleged fascist manifestations Speaking on Serbian state television, Vučić expressed understanding for the move, but indicated that genuine dialogue could only resume when participants were willing to hear differing opinions rather than echo views aligned with Brussels. He assured that Serbia would continue to prioritize peace despite what he described as ongoing attacks and unfounded accusations of orchestrating a “color revolution” in his country. The Serbian president also referenced the issue of missing persons, noting disparities in numbers between Serbs and Croats while expressing a desire to resolve the matter for all sides. Meanwhile, on 30 March, Vučić spoke over the phone with Vladimir Putin at the initiative of the Serbian side. The discussion focused on the strategic partnership between the two countries and the current situations in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Balkans – areas where Kremlin interests are prominent. The conversation covered key issues of the Russian-Serbian strategic alliance, including cooperation in energy, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors. They also discussed preparations for the upcoming April meeting of the Inter-governmental Russian-Serbian Committee for Trade, Economic, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation. Vučić expressed gratitude for the continued stable supplies of Russian gas, which are vital for Serbia’s energy security, according to a statement published on the Russian president’s website.
