"Clash-infused Beatles skiffle. Britishness at its musical best 🇬🇧"

Was this written by Tony Parsons??

Andrew Sullivan, a British migrant in the US, has the nerve to query what constitutes Britishness and the Britishness of Brown and Black Tories. And people sit around carefully analysing his work at face value in entirely good faith

*Britishness increases* 🇬🇧🇬🇧

I don’t have a photo to encapsulate Britishness, but we waited 45mins for lunch today without complaining…

Bloody good job it was nice though
October 16, 2026 at 5:40 PM
the root of this ofc is that most people neither understand nor care about the Broad inclusivity of "Greater Britishness" and are happy to use that as a cudgel to, of course, delegitimise Canadian Nationhood
October 14, 2026 at 4:10 PM
Like maybe it's a "reach" here but it strikes me that they're leaning into the innate Britishness of the property, and if part of their take here is "Aslan/birth-of-Narnia = rise of rock in British postwar pop-culture" then "Jadis/White Witch = Thatcher/Torie-resurgence" is ...a way to go 🤔👍

Now, about all this bollocks from Jenrick on Britishness/Englishness

Feels like racism to me despite all the descriptions that try and say it's not that technically

To those it's aimed at it will feel racist in nature
October 15, 2026 at 5:29 AM
easy enough, for example to find poppyshaggers using it as a "Britishness test" in facebook comments. But then also show the incredible level of commitment from, say, Indian troops to the war.

Of the past 4 Tory leaders one was not born in the UK. And it's the one whose Britishness is least likely to be questioned by the right. Funny that.
"Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch herself is foreign-born"

Surprised to see Andrew Sullivan get so much wrong here. Wrong on fact of birth. Does not seem to know this is a racist meme, not clever wordplay.

Believes bullshit projection of white minority.

Quite wrong on public views too in several ways.

Ah, my Britishness is showing! Yep!
October 12, 2026 at 4:21 PM
The idea that any of us is asked to make an argument for our Britishness is not only insulting and patronising but also pretty fucking racist
Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Exactly Richard. True Britishness is defined by shared values, contribution, and community not arbitrary checklists or exclusion!?

Them: “so I asked a generative agent for an image that encapsulated Britishness today.”
Me: “I took a photo of the fish supper I was carrying home from the chippy after I’d been for a pint.”

I think this is an important point. It's good that some Conservatives are pushing back against ethnonationalism, but if they frame it in terms of Britishness, not Englishness, then the pushback doesn't have any traction with its targets, who just see it as avoiding the 'issue'.

You have likely seen this bit of research on who Christian nationalists are, but it is illuminating

Last week I wrote a Substack about national identity, Britishness & anti-Semitism.
Today’s piece forms a bit of an epilogue. It follows on from my attendance at a lecture by @adamwagner1.bsky.social
at City University, which was disrupted by protesters.

The Libertines’ debut album Up The Bracket turns 24 today and I was reading a retrospective review of it written in 2025. The writer thinks Pete Doherty took part in the Poll Tax Riots.* They were in 1990. He was 11.

The animals are the British. It’s a total representation of Britishness.

The very Britishness of George here, using feet and kg in the same sentence describing the same object.
Rupert Kirkwood, who took this photo, has now made some calculations, and estimates the tuna in it is between 7 and 8 feet long and weighs roughly 200kg.
There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

There is no islamification of UK.
Religious freedom it a mainstay of Britishness.
October 10, 2026 at 6:24 PM
Obvious racism aside, it's also weird how the debate on the far right has descended into matters of metaphysics. Answering the question "what is Britishness?" is as relevant to government as answering the question "does the Holy Ghost descend from the Son as well?"

My favorite aspect of the Britishness of bake off is that peanut butter confounds them. Everytime. Some weird American paste with unwritten rules of usage, hahaha

Christian nationalism is big in British politics right now.

But there's a problem: we don't all agree on what it means.

Our new research explores what the British public actually thinks about Christianity, national identity, and belonging. Follow along to find out more 🧵
