Why this review? The Endangered Australian Southern Brolga (Antigone rubicunda) is a problem for the wind industry because it impedes the rollout of wind farms across Western Victoria. Previous guidelines restrict wind farm development, but the Government now uses Veltheim et al 2019 as the reference standard for Brolga modelling. This review raises questions about the usefulness and relevance of Inka Veltheim’s work for that purpose. They’re separate species, Grus antigone (Sarus) vs Antigone rubicunda (Brolga). Were considered the same spp for many years. Interestingly they’re hybridising (to complicate matters) www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11...
'It's an interesting evolutionary process we're watching': Brolgas and cranes 'crossing the dancefloor' in northern Queensland
An "evolutionary dance" is taking place in the Gulf Country of northern Queensland as two similar, but separate, species of bird are crossbreeding to produce a new hybrid species.

It'd be good for DEECA to regularly visit their managed wetlands & other likely affected parks & reserves to look for sick & dead animals - & clean up as well as test for H5N1.
Perhaps also do fox control around thr. spp such as Brolga at wetlands & incoming migrating birds along coastal shorelines?

More open water.
Better habitat.
Brighter futures for threatened waterbirds.

We're working with DEECA's Arthur Rylah Institute at Johnson Swamp near Kerang to improve wetland habitat for species including brolga and Australasian bittern.

It's all part of protecting what we love.

A response to “Avoiding a new nature crisis” #AUS (letter)
Lis Ashby’s polite interpretation of the clash between Victoria’s renewable energy expansion and the protection of the State’s biodiversity avoids addressing a darker side of the Victorian Government’s behaviour over this issue. I conclude that the actions of the State Government and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) in relation to the conflict between wind farm expansion in western Victoria and protection of the Brolga – the southern populations of which are endangered in Victoria,1,2 – show . . .

I must've missed the whole story. But what about known vulnerable spp like Black swan?
What about many other rare & threatened wetland/waterbird species such as:
Australian Painted Snipe
Freckled Duck
Australasian Bittern
Brolga
Magpie Goose?

Many other 'least concern' spp or small local pops too.
The deadly H5 bird flu that has devastated wildlife populations globally since 2021 is spreading across Australia.

Here are the birds experts are most concerned about – including some of Australia’s most common and loved species.
