the cover for british rave group the prodigy's oft-maligned "always outnumbered, never outgunned" (xl, 2004) featuring a pop art style collage with textured paper cutout-designs of lips, a cigarette, circular rose glasses, a questionable biker cap, and two wolves barking arranged to be in the vague shape of a face the prodigy were some absolutely bedlam lads. they rose to prominence in underground clubs making music that sounded like if videogames had discovered molly before shifting into a harder and heavier sound. there was always an element to punk rock to their work, but it started coming out more as producer liam howlett leaned harder into more abrasive sounds this record sounded like nothing they'd ever done before, had a tonne of guest spots, and had a vicious devil-may-care attitude which firmly put them on the shitlist of a *lot* of fans who were expecting something more like what put them on the map. i fuckin loved it from the moment the first overdriven drop slapped about 0.3 seconds into hitting play. this thing's real gritty and flippant in the way that a bad bitch has to be sometimes. one of the most misunderstood records of the uk dance scene, and in many ways the precursor that would prepare me to become obsessed with death grips later on also, even though keith flint is only on this record in one of the deluxe edition remixes, i fuckin miss him. of all the people i never expected to let his demons win, keith was the one. we'll keep partying in your honour, mate. rip the album cover for blues and grunge singer mark lanegan's bubblegum (beggars banquet, 2004) with its eloquent and simple pink text on a black background that reads "bubblegum" written vertically on the left side of the cover, with "mark lanegan band" in white smaller lettering on the top right corner dark mark. what a creature. previously a fan of his from his work with queens of the stone age, screaming trees, and mad season, i was tuned into this one right away. despite how gruff and offputting his demeanor was, regularly getting into fights with others and storming off without a word whenever he got into his own head about things, his depth as a person was pretty well known to the people he got close to and how he chose to expose his heart through his solo music. shifting between sun-baked psych rock, strangely glitchy pop rock, touches of electronic influence, some of the screaming trees' more optimistic tones, and his former solo pastoral sounds, this one had a bit of everything. real dark and soulful, really embracing the texture and timbre of mark's gravely, world-weary voice as though he's giving a confessional even when he has to shout it from the rooftops even though he never expected to grow old, it's still a shame that complications from covid are what did him in after all he'd been through. this whisky's for you, brother, rip the album cover for drone doom band sunn o)))'s white2 (southern lord, 2004), featuring a monochrome drawing of medieval beekeepers. on the top third of the cover, sunn o)))'s logo and the album title "white2" are written in an orange colour, along with the list of primary players - greg anderson, stephen o'malley, attila csihar, joe preston, rex ritter, and dawn smithson the second half of sunn o)))'s white era, continuing with their experimentation into glitchy and electro-acoustic texturing to focus on painting ethereal and haunting atmospheres rather than strictly an endurance test of a pure and oppressive wall of sound. this one really leaned in the direction of the bizarre. bassaliens in particular would signal what soma would be doing with ktl and some other projects he was involved in later. the star of the show though is the two decay tracks, overwhelmingly anxious and tense and corroded places with attila playing around with his chanting style that solidified him as the orator to hell. each decay track is over 20 minutes long and you will feel every second of that like a paralysing eternity. not my favourite of theirs, but my family unfortunately got to feel this one through the walls quite a bit that year the album cover for post-metal/sludge band neurosis' "the eye of every storm" (relapse records, 2004) featuring a simple design of a photograph of a hurricane with the name of the band and the record centred in the middle i'm giving this one an asterisk upfront, because as much as scott kelly's music inspired me, he's an abusive piece of shit and i hope he doesn't ever try to pop back up somewhere again. that said, when i was talking about sludge records in 2004 back on my leviathan post, this was what i was talking about, and i still want to highlight it this record came to me at a time when i was plunging into a lot of post rock, which neurosis had come to embrace as they shifted their sound from the darker, grimier pure sludge and dark punk sounds of their early work. sludge as a genre had recently come to my attention in 2004, which led me to this record as it had just come out at the time. what shocked me was how quiet it allowed itself to get, how much breathing room it gave despite feeling so suffocatingly grim. true to its word, we entered the eye of the storm and lingered nervously in the breaks between deluges waiting for the other shoe to drop a turning point for the band's sound and one of their less-appreciated records, but still one i am thankful for as a fellow genre-chameleon
