Of all the sorrowful tales of the privation and death bred by the Fell Winter, told over the past hundred years, Budgerigar has heard none so heart-rending.
Bingo's cousin (once removed) Dinodas Boffin has joined Budgerigar at the farmhouse, reluctantly fighting a private battle of his own.

And that such an embodiment of evil could be banished by the laughter of Bingo and the assembled Boffin clan is what Budgerigar finds the most astonishing of all.

Check out my Substack for the full narrative! It all started because I wanted to share my journey through LOTRO and decided to experiment with spiffing up the images with AI, using my knowledge of art history, referencing only long-dead artists. This first image was inspired by Maxfield Parrish.

BUDGERIGAR BOLGER’S ADVENTURES IN THE SHIRE
Part One
Budgerigar contemplates the fall of Archet, while nearby hobbits party on, oblivious to the dangers that lie just outside the Shire.

Budgerigar is glad to be home baking some Harvest Festival treats for her neighbors while she turns over in her mind the welter of phantasms that assailed her while exploring Hanson Cleary's farmhouse.

Hamster. Budgerigar. Marmoset.
He knows himself to be, in truth, a coward ---but Bingo has faith in him. It is time to finally find his courage.
They both hesitate at the cellar door. It is the only way in. He follows Budgerigar down the steps to whatever might lie below.
Their torches go out.

The blight and desolation here feel more like an approach to a dragon's den, not a hobbit farm. Dark clouds blot out the sunlight and bats emerge from their lairs to swoop ominously overhead.
Something evil lies before her. Budgerigar can feel it.

Now, as she does the washing-up, Budgerigar can hear laughter and song echoing down the lane as her neighbors amble from house to house to see if any of their porches are laden with treats.

She hears a squawk and a rumble, and then the soft scuffling of happy hobbit-feet on the porch. The sound of stickily satisfied munching fades into the distance; Budgerigar lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding.

As Budgerigar walks the path leading to the old Cleary farmhouse she misses the heft of her staff in her hands; a satchel full of letters is a poor substitute.
Bingo is famous for his overactive imagination, but this time, she thinks, he has the right of it.

And, of course, it's up to Budgerigar to fetch him back.
She mounts up and summons Bulghe, who loves nothing more than grappling with his fellow bears.
So much for celebrating in perfect safety!
