#bullheads
Bullheads have been introduced to many waters of the western US, often inadvertently mixed in with stocked channel catfish.

In the Colorado River (where I caught this yellow bullhead), invasive bullheads & other catfishes are major predators of native, endangered fishes. #25DaysofFishmas

Heads or tails: Bullheads differ from other common North American catfish (like channel + blue catfish) with their square tail fins. While flatheads also have a squarish tail, they’re generally much larger than bullheads (who don’t often grow > 16 in/40 cm long) #25DaysofFishmas

When I was a kid, we used to catch bullheads in the river that were better looking than this piece of lard.

why I kill the bullheads when I catch them in my lake: " the abundance of other coolwater fish species (e.g., Yellow Perch and Black Crappie) increased after
bullhead removals"

Six weeks after my last visit, I popped over to Clowbridge where the Red-necked Grebe is now largely sporting its summer plumage, though this 2cyr bird still retains its pale eyes. Today it was catching Bullheads (Miller's Thumb) rather than Perch! #LancsBirding #RareBirdsUk

Rather enamored with the big Banded Damoiselle nymphs that kids caught on our river dips in the Stort today for #HertsRiversWeek
Also gratifying to find shedloads of Blue-winged olive mayfly nymphs and several caddis and Bullheads, showing that the water here is still of decent quality.

Did you know...

Black Bullheads, like other catfishes, are an important host for the reproduction of #FreshwaterMussels?

Just spent 20 v pleasant mins on the phone chatting about newts, fish, bats, otters, nightjar & much else to the guy ringing about picking up my broken down car. Can't remember how we got off the topic of engines but it was great to share wildlife enthusiasm

Have tips now on where to find bullheads

I remember my dad insisting that "cleaning" the bullheads was part of the fishing experience. That's a memory I don't think I needed to make. Yeah, they're edible. Barely.

The black bullhead is a member of the Ictaluridae family (North American catfish), a group with ~50 species. Ictaluridae comes from the Greek ichthys = "fish" + ailouros = "cat": so "fish cat.” 🙃

Despite their common name, black bullheads are often more yellow-brownish in color #25DaysofFishmas

They aren't ventilated and climate controlled to the same extent as passenger planes, but most are pressurized (otherwise you need a totally different design, pressure bullheads for the crew compartment etc)

Brown trout thrive in certain stretches of the Sheaf. Bullheads too. And crayfish. We regularly see trout at Sheaf Bank where river, road and railway meet. The narrow Sheaf can quickly become a high, raging torrent after heavy rainfall. The fish disappear for weeks at a time but always return.

But have you ever found an entire school of tiny little baby black bullheads? Because the adorable factor is beyond safe limits. Look at their little whiskers!

There are 3 species of bullhead catfish in the #GreatLakes: black, brown, and yellow. Yellow is easier to distinguish because of its light-colored barbels (whiskers), but brown/black can be tricky. Black bullheads are generally uniform in color while browns are often more mottled #25DaysofFishmas

The Wissey's almost a Trout monoculture, but plenty Bullheads, males under stones & patches of gravel alive with young of the year.
