Also the babies have acquired full names, for using when they are causing trouble. Kit is Kathryn Belinda Bunchgrass (her first name is in honor of @kathryntewson.bsky.social because Kit is also very smart and inquisitive)

A closer look! I started this piece in January and tried some new brushwork for the environmental details - Douglas fir, sagebrush, bunchgrass, etc. The scene is just as important as the characters. Every bit of "background noise" is intentional to make the place feel right.

Anyway today I put down a gallon bag of my own seed mix: bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus elymoides), a small native bunchgrass that can outcompete cheatgrass; Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis), a native western fescue; and basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus).

A lovely day on friends farm in my home county of Woodford (Ky) They’ve restored native grasses across much of their 80 acres. I was captivated w the tall deep-rooted Indian blue-stem grass. perennial warm-season bunchgrass in the sorghum family -the main roots are 6–10 ft deep!

Walking along the path, I saw some blue gramma grass in someone’s yard—probably my favorite North American bunchgrass. It’s semi evergreen in my Seattle garden but out here it’s completely dormant this time of year.

Ah, I love seeing the restored #PalousePrairie on the WSU campus come to life in early spring.

The wildflowers are named for their bright yellow blooms and are found only in the bunchgrass prairies of the Pacific Northwest.

Perish the thought. Bottlebrush squirreltail is the only native grass that outcompetes cheatgrass and allows the native perennial bunchgrass ecosystem to restore itself. It's habitat restoration. Not my fault she grows invasive European grasses.

I converted the front yard to a native wildflower meadow and it’s been the talk of the neighborhood for 3 years now

If you pretend you are very very small, even a lone rock in a field of bunchgrass can be a lush forest full of life.

I love the Owyhee Mountains. They remind me of the high deserts of northern Arizona. Lush little riparian area, sweeping grasslands, forbidding escarpments, and a turbulent sky. I barely finished my field work and escaped before the rain came down.

A joyous wildflower season to you all, from our native plants & wildlife garden in the Coast Range Mountains of California!

Blue Flax flowers and magenta Clarkias amid Artemesia Californica, Baccaris Pilularis, Salvia Mellifera, and Stipa Pulchra (purple needlegrass -- our state bunchgrass).

Texas and Oklahoma appear to be growing a shit ton of sorghum that I don't remember from 20 years ago?? Also back towards Oklahoma a bunchgrass with leaves like bamboo kept popping up but I don't know what it was.

The yellow one in top center? Alkali sacaton. Lovely native bunchgrass. Gets about three feet tall,
has a lovely cloud of seed heads, and tolerates akaline soil.
