I think one can take real lessons about communism from the failures of the USSR because its problems were caused by its own implementation. I don't think Bundism failed because of anything Bundism did. It died because of the winds of history.

So under these conditions, what do you expect young Jews to do? Give them a choice between religious Orthodoxy, wan outdated liberalism, or identification with an illiberal state committing atrocities, and of course some are going to find the Bund. We've failed them.

Bundism had nothing left to offer after the Shoah. It had just been catastrophically proven utterly false as a theory of Jewish safety and thriving.

both this book and the exhausting online arguments about it have revealed is that both sides of current Jewish American debates ostensibly about Bundism have almost no interest in the actual politics or history of Bundism as it existed & are mostly just a proxy for views on Zionism in 2026
I think it might be fair to say the author doesn't really care for the Bund's Jewish particularism, as you can tell from the airy dismissal of all the Bund's Jewish concerns, the pogroms in Ukraine would kill 119,000 Jews the largest mass death of Jews before the Holocaust... but who really cares?

There was no more a conspiracy to hide Bundism - especially not "Bundism" as it is often framed, some lost and morally pure path for proud and resilient Judaism - than there is a conspiracy to hide the miasma theory of disease. It was simply a failed theory of reality with nothing to offer Jews.

Bundism DOES more neatly match to the ideal world of modern cosmopolitan leftism than Zionism does - Zionism is inherently arguing a special (temporary?) exception in light of Jewish history.
But the actual historic events were devastating for Bundism because it failed to meet the challenge!
