The dimly lit interior of the historic Besse-Marrel burial vault located in Père-Lachaise Cemetery. A severely decayed cast-iron bust of a woman sits in a central oval with small holes having been eaten away on her face over time. The bust is flanked by two stone inscription plaques; the darker one on the left is mostly illegible, while the right plaque clearly reads "ANNE MARIE BRIGITTE MARREL / VEUVE BESSE / DÉCÉDÉE LE 11 MAI 1866 / À L'ÂGE DE 73 ANS" (translated: Anne Marie Brigitte Marrel, widow of Besse, deceased May 11, 1866, at the age of 73 years). Vertical rusted metal rods line the walls to either side of the bust and fallen leaves litter the stone graves below. A dried wreath rests on the floor while a bouquet of old yet still bright artificial flowers provide a burst of colour just to the left of the bust.

On a dark gray background, old-fashioned white and green text reads: "Does the family of the deceased have to pay for the burial vault on top of the casket and the plot and the headstone and everything else? Of course they do! Death cannot defy the demands of capitalism!" The Columbarium. deadparentswhatnow.com/newsletter
