A.S. Byatt: "The Thing in the Forest"
What's the most memorable short story you've ever read?
October 29, 2026 at 4:48 AM
Finished 3 books over the weekend and now reading Possession by AS Byatt for the first time since about 1997. My book clubs both have a 350 page rule, but for this one, we've got 6 weeks between meetings instead of the usual 4.

Also: If Not, Winter - Anne Carson's Sappho translation.

I'm 75 pages into The Biographer's Tale by A.S. Byatt (out of like 400 or so) and I don't really have a great feel for what's going on. It's a lovely experience.

I have never been to the BL, but as a reader of Virginia Woolf and AS Byatt and Margaret Drabble, I consider this an outrage.
The BL quietly transforming itself into a WeWork seems like a bad idea, all things considered. If we had a Culture Secretary I’m sure they’d be all over it.
Leaving aside the rampaging elephant in the room of the degradation of access to the Library's collections since the cyberattack, my main question on reading this is why historians are still posting on X, a platform that incites violence against humans of many 'sorts' and monetises misogyny.

Another cool 90s costume drama that should get more attention is ANGELS AND INSECTS by a guy Philip Haas. It's adapted from an AS Byatt novel and it's like the Victorian period drama with all the subtext put on the screen.

Let's see:
The Carhullan Army by Sarah Hall
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Starship Librarians (anthology)

And one of my book clubs is doing Possession by AS Byatt which I last read in about '97. Need a new copy.

. In September 1956, twenty-year-old Antonia Susan Byatt jotted down these thoughts in her diary, trying to figure out if she possessed the talent her ambitions required. A few weeks earlier, on her birthday, she had written something very different: . Seventy years later, the two entries are among the personal records acquired by the British Library, along with thousands of manuscript pages of one of the most important British writers of the second half of the 20th century.
