[9] The Sea Maidens (c1885-6), Hope in the Prison of Despair (1887) & the Little Seamaid (1880s). The role of the Sea Maidens was to lure sailors with their sexuality. De Morgan’s have no such need, they have their own independence & truth.

Still, IMO what other DMs will be grappling with EVEN IF those happen is serial waves of both disinflation and technological advancement from CN --like Europe facing US c1885-1929.

The hill I will die on is that c19th women couldn’t move in clothes. This is a mid #1880s tennis dress. Yes it is not sportswear we recognise today. Yes there are layers. Yes women could ‘do’ sport & move in ways we might not imagine possible. ‘Played’ painting John Lavery #LACMA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

As far as I can tell this hasn't been noticed until I showed my amazing mum - who's spent 2 years working with the Frank Meadow Sutcliffe archive at #Whitby Museum - George du Maurier's Whitby Vikings cartoon from Punch. The FMS picture is "c1885", the cartoon 1881 but that "circa" could be critical
