The shape of the 1910s that has just a hint of the 2020s barrel leg silhouette. The narrow hobble style skirt was a fleeting style, not one for a long stride. Dress c1913, sold via Whitaker Auctions #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

'Two Men Clearing Banks.' (c1913) My first encounter with Harry Becker happened by chance when researching another painting. It is this serendipity I'm promoting through the project Everyone's Art. You can read about it here:

'Three Fishermen.' (c1913) While nearby Penzance burgeoned as a holiday resort, Newlyn in Cornwall remained a working port supporting a tightly knit community. In Harold Harvey's painting, we see him using a naturalistic style reminiscent of painters such as Dod Procter.

So trust Delphine and Timothy to have custom made costumes. They strike their pose and there is an audible groan around the room. ‘Insufferable!’ grumbles Roger from the folds of his toga. Poiret c1913 #thekyotocostumeinstitute #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Random pics I ran across during story research:
1. From Tulane University's 1917 yearbook.
2. Cover of ragtime sheet music referencing a terribly scandalous dance fad c1913.

I think I’ll share some Great women painters who easily compete in genius with men like Rembrandt, Vermeer or Picasso.

One feature of women’s art history is that the number of women artists increases over time - so actual genii have a better chance of occurring.

In 1999 I embarked on my MA thesis studying the dress of early women mountaineers. I spent the next 25 years hoping that this elusive object would turn up in a collection somewhere. A Burberry climbing gown. This dates to c1913. I have never found one yet….. #Burberry #research #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

William John Leech (1881-1968): A Convent Garden (c1913) was the artist’s celebration of his new wife’s beauty as well as the bright sunshine of France. Throughout his life he was fascinated with the depiction of light.

There is something about early #1910s silhouettes that I find deeply appealing. It might be the frequent asymmetry or the elongated skirts with the the directoire bustline. Or the sharp detailing perhaps. Whatever it is, I like it a lot. Blue velvet c1913 #thekyotocostumeinstitute #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
