The old portal, closed off with doors, around 1950. The replacement is 1,067 yards long and was concreted throughout, because bricklayers were scarce. Trains still run through it.

Maggy Rouff has not received the attention she deserved as an important designer. Alongside her creative outputs she was also head of the most important anti-piracy association in Paris which sought to protect the work of fellow artists. Here, one of her dresses c1950 #bonhams #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

'Request Stop, Hampstead.' (c1950) Stephen Bone painted a world full of charm. His style went out of fashion for some years but is again gaining popularity. If you are wondering about the colour of the bus sign, white bus signs with a red circle indicated 'compulsory' stops.

The flag is a dating tool. If the compulsory/request colour scheme has a known changeover date, the picture can be bracketed tighter than c1950. I haven't checked when the red-circle flags came in, but the London Transport sign drawings would settle it.

'View from the Window.' (c1950) Margaret Green was a painter of narrative landscapes and figure compositions of subtle strength and quiet lives; she remained largely unknown to a wider public - a story familiar to many women artists of her generation.

This image shows a kaleidoscopic, mirrored photographic distortion of the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, created in the style of experimental portraits by photographer Weegee (Arthur Fellig) around 1950.The composition multiplies and warps Dalí's iconic face, mustache, and eyes into a symmetrical, hypnotic pattern. Weegee famously used specialized prism and kaleidoscope lenses during his later career to create caricature-like distortions of famous figures. The technique turns a straightforward portrait into a surreal optical illusion fitting for Dalí's artistic persona. Considered by some to have invented tabloid photojournalism, Weegee (a.k.a Arthur Fellig) is known for his unflinching images of gangs, crime scenes, and street life in New York City, as well as his snapshots of glamorous Hollywood stars. With a reputation for being the first at the scene of a crime, Fellig cultivated his own mythology, claiming he had psychic abilities to predict crimes, and adopted the name Weegee—linked phonetically to séance-cum-boardgame Ouija—to highlight his predictive abilities. In fact, Weegee would sleep fully clothed with a police radio by his side, and kept a camera, typewriter, and darkroom equipment in the trunk of his car, enabling him to produce images with unrivalled speed. Murders and fires, Weegee once said, were his “best sellers,” his “bread and butter.” Collected by major museums: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)|Whitney Museum of American Art|The Metropolitan Museum of Art|National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.|Museo Reina Sofia Selected exhibitions 2017 Weegee, Howard Greenberg Gallery 2014 Convergences: Selected Photographs from the Permanent Collection, J. This striking sculpture is a modernist stylized female head created by Austrian artist Franz Hagenauer for Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien around the mid-20th century. Crafted from nickel-plated or chromed brass and metal featuring graceful, abstracted facial features. Adorned with distinct, sweeping looped ribbon curls that form an elegant stylized hairstyle. Mounted on a rectangular metallic base with the characteristic impressed manufacturer hallmarks on the underside. Franz Hagenauer (Vienna 1906 - 1986 Vienna) Franz Hagenauer was the younger brother of Karl Hagenauer, with whom he took over his father's workshop, founded in 1898, in the second generation. After Franz Hagenauer discovered his interest in artistic activities at the age of twelve during a youth course with Franz Cizek at the School of Arts and Crafts, he studied sculpture with Anton Hanak and metalwork with Josef Hoffmann at the same school from 1921. Over the course of his life, his artistic work increasingly focused on sculptural activities and his works, which were mostly made of sheet brass, as well as his expressive bronze torsos, can be attributed to great artistic skill. Similar to his brother's designs, a reduction of ornamentation and a focus on clear forms and contours became increasingly apparent. Thanks to numerous international commissions, the workshop was also very successful far beyond the borders of Europe. Early on, Franz Hagenauer provided designs for the Hagenauer Werkstätte and was represented at the Paris World Exhibition (1925) with works for the exhibition space. Franz Hagenauer became a member of the Kunstschau and took part in the Venice Biennale in 1934. After the war, the variety of materials was expanded and new motifs were created, some of them in wood. In 1950, Franz Hagenauer was awarded the Prize for Applied Arts of the City of Vienna. Hagenauer died in 1986, and the workshop closed shortly after.
