The moral case for reparations rests not on accumulated grievances but on accumulated wealth, and that wealth not only passes down the generations, it also compounds (e.g. slavery profits reinvested in C19th domestic industry).

Will O' The Wisp
'There in the calamus he stands
With frog webbed feet & bat winged hands
His glow worm garb glints goblin wise
& elfishly & impishly
Above the gleam of owlet eyes
A death head's cap of downy dyes
Nods out at me & beckons me...' (Madison Cawein/C19th engraving, artist unknown)

I've been working with @vch-home.bsky.social colleagues to digitise the VCH natural history focused "Volume 1s" for @bho.bsky.social Has been utterly fascinating to pick up on tidbits about perceptions of nature in the C19th/early C20th. This is Cambridgeshire, published 1938

She is appropriately pumpkin-ish as befits the season, liberally swathed in ribbon & silk fringe. It is a late 1860s/early 1870s garment from the fashion house of Mme Depret, a lesser known name in late c19th couture who nonetheless produced some sartorial delights @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Someone probably went there and took notes as part of a geological survey of Ireland in the C19th. The notebooks could be in Dublin. Your exposure reminds me of Hutton's Unconformity!

'In the C19th, Britain was the dominant global power and benefited from what economists call “exorbitant privilege”. This was the ability to easily finance debt at favourable interest rates because sterling played a central role in the int'l monetary system. London was also 🌎’s leading fin'l centre'

Just heard about a Collard in C19th Kent. Valet to a delusional vintner who assumed the role of vagabond King, then assumed nobility, and was finally Jesus before being shot dead attempting a coup

All the institutions involved go through multiple changes of governance and affiliation. In the C19th the determiners are more local -- consider Owen's College and what it becomes. Centralization is later C19th or C20th, several initiatives, 70 and 92 follow earlier ones.

I spent a long time studying an early C19th English couple. They were spared losing a child in childhood but when they lost an adult son the father was completely undone.

Two #gothic glamour Halloween Costume options this #FashionFriday - so what will it be? A human hair trimmed cloak and dress C19th style or classic black dress and rabbit mask a la Donnie Darko 1980s. The cloak does look warmer...

In the C19th, employment was a feudal relationship. The police would hunt you down if you decided not to work for someone after signing your life away. The distinction between free labour and convict labour was more ambiguous than it is today.

Jarring, not least because the word comes from the Latin. Its use in political commentary owes more to the example/threat of the Gracchi, as interpreted in the late C19th (the approach of universal suffrage), than Cleisthenes.

Art Schools maintain clear nationally determined educational standards, but take their awarding powers from the source of finance, the C19th industrialists or C20th state. External reliance there, will be (I think) because they lack a clear professional body. 1966 is probably the critical year.

He doesn’t fit into a neat story about the development of Russian music - the impact of the emancipation of the serfs in the mid-C19th, the emergence of nationalist composers & the tension between those who were European-influenced and those who resisted that (qv the latest edition of Key Changes).
