For Indigenous People’s Day, I’d like to infodump about the Cahokia mound. Built near present day St. Louis around 1000 CE, it was a vast trade hub with a population of about 20,000. This made it the largest city north of Mexico on the continent, bigger than London and Paris at the time!

The book Cahokia Jazz is a revelation. One of the best alt-history books I’ve ever read. Highly highly recommend if you like alt history and/or noir.

Kind of bummed I lived in Illinois for years and never made it to Cahokia (although I didn't own a car, so that was one limiting factor). Around 1200 AD there were likely more people here than in London or Paris!

Thinking again about what a good novel Cahokia Jazz is. Y’all should read it.
120 pages in & I am in awe of this novel. Last year a novel was published, to acclaim, that posited a historically altered America. I found it unconvincing in every way. This is the opposite—Spufford’s vision of an America where the Cahokia civilization survived feels bigger than the book itself.
