Yes that is true. I now tried both CakeWallet and the less bloated MoneroDotCom variant and tried importing my wallets with my (apparently legacy) seeds. Both show 0 XMR even though I use the wallets with multiple softwares and they always worked, restore height was correct too. Really odd. Also not a fan that they dont have an F-Droid repo, which would be way more secure than Obtainium. And how many things they integrate gives them a really big attack surface. I still use Monerujo as Monfluo does not support unlocking with system credentials (biometrics) or fiat conversion. Both are no huge dealbreakers. Also there was a weird issue on their F-Droid repo, “chain validation failed” This might be because of the eMudhra/Comodo debacle?

not-wittingly: > With Cake wallet though, I believe you can enable background syncing. Would that achieve pretty much the same result as self-hosting a light wallet? Client with BG sync enabled and running your own node? It doesn’t work well for me unfortunately. CakeWallet is a pretty buggy app imo, again, unfortunately. not-wittingly: > I suppose that can make a bit more sense if it’s self-hostable. I just think sending your view-key off to someone else is just defeating a lot of the privacy of Monero though. I mean I don’t see a big problem if you’re selfhosting it. Servers are gonna be less secure than phones tho.

not-wittingly: > your wallet sends off to the node the blockheight you need to sync from. so that is something the node does get - the last time you sync’d your wallet. so you only need to download the blockchain since your last transaction. it’s not stored either, it’s just like streaming netflix or whatever, just scans it and doesn’t take up any storage on your device. Do CakeWallet operate this way?

A third party node can associate all you transactions, at least inside the same wallet. You can try to mitigate this by using a bunch of different wallets and preventing the wallet software from loading them at the same time (not sure if this is possible with for exampel CakeWallet) But if your use your own node, you dont have that problem. You could just use a single wallet and a still more anonymous then anyone with 100 different wallets.

Here’s a video tutorial of using CakeWallet and GrapheneOS. You can skip the GrapheneOS part or just enjoy it. You install CakeWallet from Google Play, the Apple App Store, or Accrescent/GitHub.
