With pending construction near historic buildings, I adjusted the syllabus. Students did shovel tests. They found some pottery shards, broken ceramic plates, coal & old gravel used in the old pathways. They loved talking to the Dean, campus chaplain and campus archivists about it. #campushistory

With a book talk later this evening, I am catching up on some campus history work and grading. #2025SHA was a very affirming break with other historians. Back to reality. #amwriting #campushistory

I have nothing to contribute except that my team is training undergrads to deliver #campushistory tours and we had practice runs today and the KIDS ARE ALRIGHT.

Thinking about Japanese American incarceration today, Dec. 7. So, here is a piece I wrote on Yuri Nemoto (‘47), JMU’s first Asian American student, who received a scholarship while incarcerated & spoke out bravely while at Madison College. www.jmu.edu/news/2022/09... #campushistory #publichistory

Today marks the first of several events for the dedication of With These Hands: A Memorial to the Enslaved and Exploited and opening of Oak Row exhibition space. I am glad to have been involved with this project and recovering this history.

Yesterday, I gave my Reclaimed Histories (aka Hidden Voices) #campushistory tour to some mid level univ administrators from across divisions. Then they discussed the meaning of the stories heard. Overwhelmed by the responses: Ppl reported feeling proud, empowered, intrigued, educated. So pleased!

What would you have done if you were the first & only Japanese American on a segregated campus of white southern women in 1943? 🗃️

This 1910 map of campus buildings doesn't really show something in the position of that large building near the left edge. Folwell Hall was finished in 1907 and maybe from some angles shows a gable end but the distance and position seem wrong (just to Armory's west)

Cheering up by reflecting on how well my oral history seminar went. I had a great, diverse group of 1st year MA students. Each brought something unique to the class. And last week during reunion weekend each conducted an interview w/an alum from class of ‘76. #publichistory #campushistory +

I’d love to chat with others doing #campushistory of the mid to late 20thC, if you are doing this work, too. I know a few people working on the 1970s but welcome 80s and 90s too.

Given the news about the Pentagon’s DEI history purge, I’m sharing this marvelous piece about Col. Frances Weir (Madison College ‘49) who joined the WAC & went on to break the Army’s glass ceiling in the 1970s. 🗃️#campushistory #WomensHistory www.jmu.edu/news/2024/04...
