Canada is investing heavily in a new fleet of German-built 212CD submarines, which will serve dual roles in both peacetime operations and potential conflicts. These diesel-electric submarines, capable of traveling up to 7,000 nautical miles, are designed for long-range missions and stealthy operations. Key responsibilities include patrolling Canada's coastal waters, protecting critical infrastructure like undersea cables, and potentially engaging in global hotspots such as the South China Sea or Arctic regions. The submarines will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including torpedoes and supersonic cruise missiles, though they lack the strategic ballistic missile capabilities of South Korean alternatives. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the procurement's significance as Canada's largest defense deal, prioritizing integration into European supply chains over acquiring a nuclear-capable platform. While NATO expects Canada to focus on defensive roles rather than strategic deterrence, experts note that the decision could have implications if Canada faces isolation in future conflicts. The project underscores Canada's growing military modernization efforts amid geopolitical tensions.

This long-term agreement ensures the operational readiness of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as it modernizes its strategic transport and refueling capabilities. The partnership includes a 10-year maintenance contract and a seven-year materiel contract, with built-in options that could extend the service period to 20 years.
