The more i research, the more it's clear that the defining business relationship of the early PC era was never Microsoft and IBM.
It was Microsoft and Compaq.
And it happened because Gates saw Canion as an engineer. And Canion was the only CEO who was fine with Gates being a weird little gremlin.

If you were a PC clone company buying MS DOS after 1982 to bundle with your machine, you were getting one version back of Compaq DOS.

That networking is vital because Canion, and his friends Jim Harris and Bill Murto, are career TI men in Texas. At a time when VC funding (still in its infancy) is almost all in California and based on who you know.

Ask Canion today what he's proudest of in life and he nearly always talks about his family (and the joy of being a stepfather). Then seems to suddenly remember he founded Compaq and the interviewer probably wanted him to say that.
