Yesterday I ate the most extraordinary fruit I’ve ever eaten: a canistel, aka eggfruit. Its texture was surprisingly creamy, somewhere between custard and roasted pumpkin. It tasted sweet and earthy, like sweet potato and butterscotch. Absolutely delicious and unlike anything I’ve tried before.

I'm planting dozens of rare fruit trees at Florida Tech (with permission). In 10-20 years, if we're still doing the organized society thing, students and the savvy public will have plenty of Mangoes, Sapodillas, Jackfruit, Mamey Sapote, Black Sapote, Canistel, Avocados and much more to graze on.

Another Pouteria, the Pouteria campechiana, or canistel, native to Mexico, has a soft texture often compared to an egg yolk (which is the other reason it is called an egg fruit).
It was introduced to Asia as xiantao (仙桃), "peach of the immortals", referring to a mythical fruit that gives long life.

Canistel is native to southern Mexico and Central America but is now cultivated in many tropical countries around the world and sometimes imported. I found one at a fresh fruit stand in Hawaii.

(Es curioso que ese CANASTILLO dio nombre también a un árbol, tanto en español como en inglés: CANISTEL ("Pouteria campechiana").
¿Y diría que la palabra española, en otra ida y vuelta más, viene de la inglesa?)

Thanks for including me Eggz! 💙
It’s seasonal plant migration here when I take my tropical fruit trees outside and I just remembered….
The English name of my favorite fruit (canistel) is eggfruit! I have 5 trees (two are seedlings that will get grafted).

The canistel is related to and sometimes confused with the lucuma, which has a similar flavor but a somewhat drier texture and harder green peel. Both are popular in Central and South America, especially in ice cream, milkshakes, and desserts.

These are all very different plants! :)
Ylang Ylang, is as mentioned, in Annonaceae. These are magnolids, a rather distant branch of flowering plants.
Star Apple is in Sapotaceae, with fruits like Mamey Sapote, Sapodilla, Canistel, Abiu, etc. Also Shea. The family is asterids.
