we are 2 days away from submitting the first complete draft of our translation of Zourabichvili's Spinoza: A Physics of Thought. 115k words. it is a beautiful and terrifying work: ruthless, unafraid of where reason leads, uncompromising. "Materia formas omnes, quarum est capax, successivè assumat."

Starmer's historic reputation, I think, will end up being a fascinating answer to 'how would Churchill be assessed if he had *only* been prime minister from 1951 to 1955, when he mostly couldn't really do the job anymore'
Working in Starmer’s Number 10 was ‘unbearable’, says Sue Gray
Former chief of staff to previous PM describes onslaught of negative briefings and says Starmer ‘lacked vision’

What was that quote about the Roman emperor Galba? Ah, here we are, from Tacitus: "Capax imperii nisi imperasset" (roughly, "fit to rule, had he not ruled"). Seems to describe Starmer pretty well.

not the main point but Sunak really does rival Brown in the capax imperii nisi imperasset stakes, doesn't he?

Gaper clams are so called because their siphons are too beefy to be fully retracted into their shell, so they gape open at one end. As with geoducks, this big snorkel is an adaptation to living deep in the sediment, where having a gap in the armor isn't as big a vulnerability! (310)
