#carbimazole
I do enjoy that I get regular letters telling me that "you are taking carbimazole, which is a very safe medication, except when it kills you 🥺"
Anyway the doctor was very nice once I got to see him and I did not have agranulocytosis but I did have an infection that ended up needing antibiotics, so.

... I got a load of patronising guff back from the receptionist because "it's just a sore throat and fever" - apparently the word "carbimazole" can be repeated half a dozen times before it sinks in.

Carbimazole was another - in 2016.

One thing I'm an "expert" patient on is thyroid meds 😁 Carbimazole gave me my life back. Superbly effective drug! Being human there was obviously a next step offered (so levothyroxine for me now) but carbimazole will always have a special place in my affection. A wonder drug! 👍

(2/2) In adfition to the 2 meds metioned above, over the years I've experienced lack of supply of some antibiotics & a thyroid med called Carbimazole.

That's 4 meds just for one person. How many in total? How many patients impacted?

I’ve come to the same conclusion with Carbimazole

Good luck. Trixie has hyperthyroidism and it takes 2 of us to give her the carbimazole tablet

It's a leeeeeeeetle bit silly but many a time it's prevented me dithering for hours because I'm too tired to get ready for bed and then crashing out fully clothed with the lights on and not having taken my carbimazole - a non-negotiable.

I guess with me it was because GPs don't (rightly) like to muck about with carbimazole, even tho' hospital don't have same reservations because they're aware of full clinical picture. I just wanted consultant to help make things easier for me on the admin front, as admin is a huge drag for patients

Once I had had my carbimazole increased and was told that if I had certain symptoms including a sore throat and a fever shortly afterwards I needed to speak to a doctor urgently because it could be a rare and life threatening side effect. This then happened to me and..

HRT is impossible to get atm. I think the gel is MAYBE still available, but at $60 a month, & awful to use.

Years ago I struggled to find Carbimazole. Radioactive iodine fixed that. I can't always have substitute antibiotics due to other meds.

Then there is the continuing shortage of IV fluids.

Have they put you on carbimazole? I'm guessing your thyroid is hyperactive.

I didn't worry about mine, just took radioactive iodine to get rid of them. 😁
Radioactive Iodine – Three Months In
Three months after my radioactive iodine treatment, I am a happy little Vegemite!

P.S. Propranolol (heart) + carbimazole (thyroid) soon sorted me out. Definitive treatment followed, as my thyroid was a victim of autoimmune. Being hypo + unmedicated for a time after radioiodine was strange, but not bad. After everything, it was nice being an unthinking slug for a while.

the meds to reduce the hyper weren't working for me. u can't be on carbimazole for too many years bc it affects ur bone density. since i was dx'd as a teen, i was still growing. irradiation was the only option

altho, even in hypo my thyroid hormones won't level. idk why

Yes, it's not easy. Because full blood counts were routine for me (carbimazole) I learnt quickly to ignore the bits that were out of range (there were always a few) that weren't relevant. Those that were relevant (the usual) were always picked up by consultant anyway 1/2

To the pharmacy to pick up my prescription. Expected 28 Carbimazole tablets to start next Wednesday plus a few more to fill the gap between now & then. Only got 14. To the surgery (thankfully close by). They hadn’t actioned the letter from the hospital despite saying, 2 days ago, that they would. 🙄

I liked being put on propranolol for short bursts (an accompaniment twice to initial carbimazole prescription). As I said to Mr Shed, I have to get my LOLs somehow 😁 And I sort of did with that, feeling deliciously chilled and in good humour (not antsy). The cap fitting, so to speak 👍

They got my numbers level for radioiodine (with carbimazole, stopped just before radioiodine). After RAI they wait to see whether treatment has worked (no medication at all) and three months afterwards my TSH was over a hundred (!) and my FT4 was less than 0.5. Oh boy, it had worked all right 🤣
December 23, 2024 at 8:48 PM
Neither. I swallowed radioactive iodine. So I still have all my thyroid, it just doesn't work too well any more, so thyroxine it is. I got 5 years before I went hypo though.

Mine couldn't be stabilised on a safe dose of Carbimazole, so the next option was the radioactie iodine.

I was put on them for thyrotoxicosis, but not for long. Just until the carbimazole kicked in and Endo could then taper off the propranolol (fairly rapidly - 7 days) to stopping point. I had no probs with propranolol but then I was a physical mess anyway so would barely have noticed any side effects

Ça dépend du traitement et du dosage, la prise d'antibiotiques, les anti-dépresseurs à un certain dosage posent problèmes. Et tout les médicaments de cette liste.

No, I didn't think that. But I have faced these shortages before, it is not uncommon. In fact I've experienced carbimazole shortages too, back in 2016. Not on that any more, so not sure if that is a regular problem or not.

I'm also on authority only meds - let's hope those don't end up a problem!
