I'm always interested to see the locations car brochure photographers used for some long-ago shot. Today I was in the beautiful Welsh/Italian village of Portmeirion and ticked off a couple of beauties, starting with this dramatic archway framing an early Bentley T series. #carbluesky 🧵

The pillarless coupé version of the rock-solid Mercedes-Benz W123 (strictly speaking, the C123) had an elegant, understated profile, enhanced by alloy wheels in this 1982 brochure. Four-cylinder 230CE and six-cylinder 280CE models were available. #carbluesky 🧵

Billed at is launch as 'more powerful and more luxurious than any Audi 80 we've ever built', the CD featured the company's fuel-injected 1994cc 5-cylinder engine, developing 115bhp and giving a 115mph top speed. This is a late-1983 UK brochure. #carbluesky 🧵

Volkswagen's front-wheel-drive Scirocco coupé was six years old by the time of this 1980 UK brochure, but its Giugiaro styling was still elegant and eye-catching. The 85bhp 1.6 GLS was the cheaper of the two models then on offer for British buyers. #carbluesky🧵

Mazda's rotary-engined models took a hit in many markets after the 1973/4 fuel crisis, but the company persevered in North America. This 1977 brochure features the RX-3SP coupé, pitched as 'a reasonably-priced performance car', with plenty of track pictures. #carbluesky🧵

Peugeot's returned to the coupé market in triumphant form with what this 1997 brochure described as the 'thrilling and stylish' 406 coupé, displaying the deft touch of Pininfarina. Three models were available for the UK market: the 2.0, 3.0V6 and V6 SE. #carbluesky 🧵

This 1970 brochure on the Mk3 version of the Triumph GT6 featured a espionage theme, photographed somewhat in the style of popular contemporary TV productions such as The Persuaders. It told the story of a couple's journey across a European border, transporting a mysterious briefcase. #carbluesky 🧵

The 'seventies were predicted to be the decade of the Wankel rotary engine, but instead many carmakers saw their investment in this technology wasted. Citroën's ambitious upmarket GS Birotor, launched in late 1973, proved a dismal flop, with less than 850 sold. #carbluesky 🧵

The 4-door saloon bodystyle, with a gently-sloping new boot design, was the first addition to the Saab 900 range, which originally inherited the 3- and 5-door 'combi-coupé' bodies from the company's evergreen 99 model. It is shown in range-topping Turbo form in this 1982 UK brochure. #carbluesky 🧵

Renault's sports car offering for the'60s, the Frua-styled Caravelle, is featured in 1100S form in this English-language brochure from 1964. Related to the rear-engined Dauphine, it was at its purest as a convertible, shown with its detachable hardtop. #carbluesky 🧵

The confusingly-named Porsche 912 was an entry-level version of the 911, featuring the 1.6-litre engine from the earlier 356, detuned to 90bhp. This is the 1965 launch brochure. After around 32,000 were sold the model was dropped during 1969, though that wasn't quite the end... #carbluesky🧵

The DeTomaso Longchamp, using Ford 5.8-litre V8 power, arrived in 1972 with grand tourer styling by Tom Tjaarda. This 1980 brochure introduced the lightly-facelifted series 2 version. It was always an exclusive model, with just 409 examples made over 17 years. #carbluesky🧵

Available from 1999-2006, the C215 Mercedes-Benz CL had quite a road presence. Its arched cabin profile was a departure from the style of its well-regarded predecessor, as was its four-headlamp nose. The CL500 and V12 CL600 are shown in this 2004 brochure. #carbluesky🧵

The last hurrah of the historic Wolseley marque was as the short-lived flagship of British Leyland's new 18-22 range, sold only in 1975. The car's very bold wedge-shaped two-box styling worked surprisingly well with Wolseley's traditional grille and illuminated badge. #carbluesky 🧵

Despite its name, the coupé version of Volkswagen's Polo mk2 was not quite as sporty or rakish as this 1990 UK brochure tried to imply. The 1.05-litre standard model could achieve 'nearly' 90mph and went from 0-50mph in 11.6 seconds, but did boast a 5-speed gearbox. #carbluesky 🧵

Ford of Europe followed Volkswagen's formula when creating the Orion, a booted notchback based on the successful FWD Escort. Like VW's Jetta it had its own name and defined marketing niche. The sporty 105bhp 1.6 Injection is featured here in this 1985 brochure. #carbluesky🧵

Citroën reflected scenes of French life with this 1981 brochure on its mid-sized GSA. The range-topping Pallas hatchback is shown acting as a wedding car in this spread. The GSA was a facelift of the earlier GS, with a hatchback being its most important innovation. #carbluesky 🧵

Volvo's 700 series was all-new for the 1980s, and first seen in V6 luxury form as the 760GLE. The styling managed to be more relentlessly angular than the elderly 200 series, which the 700 would gradually supplant. The new car would set Volvo's styling direction for the decade ahead. #carbluesky🧵

British Leyland's troubles meant its vital new Austin Maestro was slow to reach production. The company was therefore keen to make the practical but rather dull design seem high-tech; it featured electronic instruments and voice synthesiser on posh models like this 1984 Vanden Plas. #carbluesky 🧵

Alfa Romeo signalled its place at the heart of the history and culture of Italy in this 1981 brochure on its Alfetta 2000L saloon. This main gatefold spread showed the car central to a subtle, yet atmospheric scene set in the Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano. #carbluesky 🧵

The most obscure member of Alfa Romeo's Alfasud family was the 3-door Giardinetta estate car (called Kombi in this 1978 West German brochure). First shown in 1975, production numbers were puzzlingly low: less than 6,000 were made in total, and it was only offered in a few markets. #carbluesky 🧵

Audi had introduced the 200 badge in 1978 for upmarket versions of the existing 100, and it continued into a second generation as Audi's then-flagship model. The 144mph 200 quattro in this 1988 brochure is described as 'true luxury allied to supreme mobility'. #carbluesky🧵
