I had a guy show up to do an estimate - had the company shirt, letterhead, carboncopy paper, everything. Gave him my deposit. Turns out he'd been fired two weeks before for scamming. He was intercepting estimate calls via a receptionist who was in on it. Didn't get caught until he assaulted a woman.
