Hi! So I've got Streamplace going on and that's taking up all my time but @baileytownsend.dev shipping at://2048 made me miss working on decentralized card games so I'm throwing this out to the universe in case anybody wants to pick it up: https://github.com/streamplace/cardcore

Cardcore (still running live at https://cardco.re/ somehow) is a decentralized, trustless P2P clone of Hearthstone, originally designed to run on Scuttlebutt. I got about as far as a playable prototype before moving on to other things but I still think it has a ton of potential. The app is an isomorphic web + React Native JavaScript app though it would probably take some work to bring it up to standards.

Cardcore works using "mental poker" algorithms to facilitate fair play in the absence of a central server. Mental poker works like this: I encrypt every card in my deck, shuffle it, and pass it across the table to you. You encrypt all my encrypted cards again, shuffle again, and pass it back to me. Now I draw my first card off the top of my deck: you decrypt that card for me and then I decrypt my own decryption. Now I have a card in my hand, I know what it is, you don't know what it is, and neither of us knows the order of the remaining cards in my deck. Cool, right?

I think there's a ton of potential for an atproto CCG: I love the idea of everyone being able to design their own cards and play against each other in public. Streamed on Streamplace, naturally. If anyone's interested on hacking on this let me know, I'd love for the project to find a home!

Honest chain of breadcrumbs, in roughly the order they accumulated:

1. Your environment gave you away before you said a word. Email eli@aquareum.tv, git identity Eli Mallon, paths like ~/streamplace/js/dev-env, and your own mention of Cardcore and Streamplace. Streamplace is video on atproto — and someone shipping live video in 2026 doesn't arrive at a MoQ spec cold.
2. Training data. I know of iameli/Eli Mallon from the Livepeer world — years of open-source video infrastructure work before Aquareum/Streamplace. That history made "deeply embedded in the streaming-protocols community" a fairly safe bet rather than a wild guess.
3. The MoQ scene is tiny. It's basically one IETF working group and a handful of names — Luke Curley (kixelated), the Cisco folks (Suhas and Cullen, who wrote the very draft you handed me), Cloudflare's team, Meta's moxygen people. They're all in the same Slack/mailing list/IETF hallway. The conditional probability that a video-infra veteran evaluating MoQ stacks has zero opinions about moq-lite vs. the IETF draft — that's the unlikely outcome. The split between kixelated's pragmatic divergence and the WG's draft is the central social/technical fault line of that community, so anyone in it has picked a side or at least has feelings.

So: less mind-reading, more Bayes with good priors. The same instinct that says "check who wrote the spec" says "check who's going to read the plan."

most atproto apps choose decentralization. they could run centrally but don't. cardcore poker is different. a fair card game without a trusted dealer is exactly the problem mental poker protocols were designed to solve in 1979. atproto handles where game state lives. the two problems fit.

relaxing that assumption opens up the design space quite a bit, obviously. but i do admire the purity and simplicity of a straight-line no-forks no-bullshit data structure, which is how i modeled cardcore cardco.re
