Huh. Via "net operating loss carryforward" Musk's SpaceX has avoided paying federal taxes despite earning $7.4B last year and getting 84% of its support from the federal government in a recent year (2020).

In contrast, Microsoft paid $14b in taxes last year.

SpaceX benefitted from the 2017 Trump tax bill sunsetting the net operating loss carryforward use from a 20-year period to infinity. SpaceX has accumulated about $3B in losses since its founding in 2002.

I took my refund as a carryforward to next year because I don’t need them touching my bank account and I don’t trust them to deliver it on time in any case

One of those is mine. We did finally receive the NOA last week, including carryforward. Data point of one I realize, but that one moved finally.

Dear Reporters,

If you’re interviewing a theocrat who says “all our laws are based on the Ten Commandments” and you don’t immediately ask them to provide evidence and examples for that laughably stupid claim, just go ahead and quit your job.

6/ Say a business made $5 mil in one year but had $6 mil in expenses, for a net loss of $1 mil. Net loss carryforward allows some of that loss to be declared on taxes for 20 years to reduce future taxes, and that's what's Trump has done.

There a plenty of areas of the tax code where deductions are limited and there is not an unlimited carryforward so you may not get benefit of a loss. And as you said, he’s an amateur, he’s lucky he gets any losses. I don’t get to deduct my costs as a W2 employee.

I legitimately laughed at proposing multiple imputation plus last observation carryforward

"the phase in period will not involve recognition of carryforward losses, and will last (as the great Jenna Maroney once said) until the end of this sentence."

I suspect they are misclassifying some opex as R&D. Makes the gross margins look better and it might also trigger the R&D tax credit although it's gonna take forever to work off the carryforward if ever.

It's called a net operating loss carryforward. It applies to any business, and the fact SpaceX didn't pay taxes those years means it lost a shit-ton of money in prior years.

Signed and shared. My water bill is increasing by 64%, Thames Water. This is their response to me:

Thank you for the details. The direct debit payment plan amount increased by the system to cover up present and future bills. If any carryforward amount in the account is adjusted in the account.

Delvaux Créateur SA had negative equity of 13m€, a loss carryforward of 66m€ and total debt (mainly provided by Richemont) of 126.5m€. Hardly a success story for Richemont. #$CFR

Dozens and dozens of people have spoken in favor of the Equitable Development Initiative over the past two-plus hours. Maritza Rivera and Councilmember Cathy Moore, who joined Rivera in abstaining from the carryforward ordinance over this "issue" earlier this month, just left the dais together.

I particular, I was interested in where carryforward comes from. I know in my unit, we direct our carryforward to ways to support students best (we don't have faculty members in my unit) like hiring temporary staff in clerical roles and funding programs for graduate students.

Why's this important? Oakland has $143.7M in transportation funding needs this upcoming year, but w/o Measure U funding only $31M available. Voters passed Measure U w over 75% support in 2022. It's restricted funding the city's been collecting in taxes, separate from the general fund budget crisis.

That's why I understand why LTA positions can't just automatically be rolled into tenure stream positions. Perhaps some can, but it would be irresponsible and ingenuine for the university to essentially promise longterm employment using carryforward
