🤩 Very proud to announce that today @chiaratenne.bsky.social first #ant paper has been published in #JCP-A @springernature.com 🥳🧪👩‍🔬
We show that also C. hellenica has a magnetic sense suggesting that magnetoreception is rather common than unique in #Cataglyphis ants 🧭🐜🇬🇷

Grob et al. show that Cataglyphis ants do not rely on the inclination but rather use the polarity of the geomagnetic field for path integration during learning walks in their natural habitat. This sug...

jiminy's animal reviews: The Saharan silver ant (𝘊𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘺𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢) is an ant in heat. Er, well, that is to say it deals well with heat. Remarkably well. They emerge from their nests during the hottest part of the day when just about every other animal has sought refuge. 🧵

The Sahara is one of the most brutal environments on Earth: Sands reach 70°C (158°F).
Solar radiation can cook you alive.

So imagine the absolute bad-ass ants that thrive here, eating the remains of less-capable desert survivors.

Meet the Saharan silver ant, Cataglyphis bombycina.

What is unique, so far as I know, is that they produce these heat shock proteins in ADVANCE of exposure to heat.

We usually assume 🐜 ants 🐜 learn views when facing their goal, but our data shows that it is not necessarily the case!

We combined field experiments with a biologically constrained model to show how a two-stage neural circuit (MB -> CX) could allow this:

1/5 A unique form of magnetic sense among insects

When desert ants (Cataglyphis nodus) leave the nest in search of food, they walk in a zigzag pattern and return in a perfectly straight line.
