One of my 1st library jobs was in serials & I originally wanted to be a serials cataloger. I laughed so hard at this. 🤣

No AI agent is replacing human authors when you have cataloging librarians who are readers. Support your local cataloger. We're not exactly new to this.

Contractors found black mold. Remediation will cost a ton of money. I am unhappy today. But I did get some street credit for declaring that, as a rare books cataloger, I do NOT fuck around with black mold.

there's a reason why every library cataloger puts "map(s)" in the description field next to "illustrations" and pages through the entire book to see if they're there.

not every day but as a academic librarian cataloger i've had the opportunity to catalog thousands of maps in my 20 year career. unfortunately i've finished the bulk of the backlog.

I've kind of come full circle in terms of libraries. When I was a child, my father took us to the library every single Saturday. For 32 years, I worked as a cataloger in a community college library. Now that I'm retired, I'm back to the same public library I grew up in. 1/3

And for those who don't know me: I worked as a cataloger in an academic library for 32 years, so I had no shortage of books to read.

Every classical music cataloger is very particular about fonts in their presentations. You think this person who can name their top 5 Goldberg variations recordings in 10 seconds is going stick to Arial??? Garamond at LEAST. Serifs or GTFO.

love to think about a fifty-something LOC cataloger crossing the Maine-Quebec border in the dead of night and spending the next 20 years as an undocumented dishwasher, paid in cash, scrubbing plates in an endless series of suburban Montreal restaurants

And I just emailed my cataloger, telling her to take him off the auto-order list. I'm done.

In Islamic written heritage, texts for magic and divination can also contain stories from the rich literary heritage of regional folktales.

Celeste Gianni, cataloger of Arabic manuscripts at HMML from 2020 to 2024, shares some examples: hmml.org/stories/series-story-tracing-folktales-in-magic-texts

Officially published article now available. Funny how it comes a work day too late to plug at the presentation last Friday. At least we had the DOI to share and a “get it now” link to the post print in Western’s open repository. Glad this project is now done. #metadata #ai

Sixteen hours of integration on vdB 8, vdB 7, vdB 9 and the dark cloud LDN 1357 in Cassiopeia, and a short story about an astronomer who learns why the star beside the Helping Hand beats like a heart.
LDN 1357: The Hand Is Not Open
I set down this account not in any hope of being believed, but because the frames themselves will outlast me, and someone ought to know what they are looking at. For sixteen hours across many nights I turned my instrument toward that obscure corner of Cassiopeia where, beside the modest glow the catalogs call vdB 8, there spreads a thing no cataloger ever troubled to name aright. The dark cloud there is listed merely as LDN 1357, one of eighteen hundred and two such voids that a patient astronomer charted from the Palomar survey plates in 1962: a number, and nothing more. Numbers are a mercy. They spare us from looking too long. Against that blackness lies a pale, luminous smear which I can describe only as an alien translucent gel, spread across the stars as though something vast had dragged its palm through them. Amateurs have given the dark shape a cheerful nickname, the Helping Hand, for its outstretched fingers of dust. I no longer find it cheerful. The gel is lit, the catalogs say, by the star SU Cassiopeiae, and it was in reading of that star that my unease first curdled into dread. SU Cas is a Cepheid. It swells and shrinks, brightens and fades, on a rhythm of one day and nearly twenty-three hours, regular as a heart. Worse, the learned papers report that it does not even beat in its natural mode, but in an overtone, a higher and quicker harmonic, like a voice singing above its proper register. And the scholars, with the bland caution of their kind, allow that the physical connection between the star and the glowing stuff beside it is _uncertain_. Uncertain! As though the star merely happened to lie there. As though the gel merely happened to glow. I compared my earliest frames against my last. I tell myself the differences are noise, flats, the clumsy arithmetic of stacking. I tell myself the smear cannot have crept a hair's breadth toward the dark fingers in a few weeks, since nothing so vast could move so quickly. Reason says this. Reason has always said this, right up to the moment it stops being consulted. Last night I did not image. I sat beneath the open roof and counted, as a man counts the seconds after lightning, the hours since the star's last brightening. It came precisely on schedule, as it always does. **And there in the dark, with the camera cooling beside me, I understood at last that a heart which beats so steadily must be pumping something, and that the hand was never open in greeting. It is closing.** * * * Capture Details AstroBin Top Pick Total Integration 16h Captured Sep 18, 2023 Integration per Filter Lum: 8h (48 × 600″) Red: 2h 40m (16 × 600″) Green: 2h 40m (16 × 600″) Blue: 2h 40m (16 × 600″) Equipment Telescope: Takahashi TOA-130NFB Camera: ZWO ASI6200MM Pro Mount: 10Micron GM1000 HPS Focuser: Pegasus Astro FocusCube2 Filter Wheel: ZWO EFW 7 x 2″ Power: Pegasus Astro Powerbox Advance Gen2 Flat Panel: DeepSkyDad Flap Panel (FP1) Filters Chroma Lum 50 mm, Chroma Red 50 mm, Chroma Green 50 mm, Chroma Blue 50 mm Software Aries Productions Astro Pixel Processor (APP), Pleiades Astrophoto PixInsight, Russell Croman Astrophotography BlurXTerminator, Russell Croman Astrophotography NoiseXTerminator, Russell Croman Astrophotography StarXTerminator Location DSP Remote Observatory: Animas, NM: Bortle 1 View the full-resolution image and technical details on AstroBin.

My pal worked there 40 years. They took his job away and made him an admin ast (Director of Exhibits). My friend the Japanese cataloger got moved to Front Desk.

They both retired which was the point. You can work somewhere FORTY YEARS to be shoved into a level 1 task.

None of them care tho.
