The larger part of our faithful find some compelling reason not to come back.

Perpetually secondary role of women
Experience of divorced, remarried
Communion rules
Politics
Institutional centric focus
Black/white catechetics
High road/no road approach

Episcopal faith is considerably more open.

Today on my series on the spiritual idea of the parish I talk about the parish as a community of memory. Aside from catechetics or apologetics with its many programs, the parish itself ritually remembers. In fact, it’s a better sort of remembering.

When did so many American Catholics become so right-wing and nationalistic? Some comments I have been reading are uncharitable, lack any compassion and appear to ignore the Gospel. What is being preached? Who is delivering catechetics?

His distinctions (and your book) helped me, especially in terms of distinguishing audiences. Too often, core theology was being reduced to catechetics or apologetics, but these do not really capture what many of us do in our core theology classes.

An interesting claim from Lonergan in a footnote to his essay "Christology Today":
"In catechetics, & more generally in communications, the rule is pluralism, for one has to express the Christian message in the language & style appropriate to a given class of people in a given culture." 1/2

OK I just found this, which credits it to Lancelot Andrewes, who was not contenporary to Jesus, nor to Augustine (3rd C), but a 17th C Anglican writing about Catechetics

(2nd try, spellimg was wrong)

Oh! Yes when you maybe don't feel like it cos it's difficult & thankless; No when you really feel like bossing him because you personally don't like what he's doing. My mam did a diploma in catechetics when I was a kid, her thesis was on this question, so I've been thinking about it my whole life :D

Huge heretofore unapprefiated implications for theology, for psychotherapy, for catechetics

So to be fair - I went to Catholic high school, took Catechetics and am actually a recognized Catechist of the Catholic Church as a result...

Look I took Catechetics, I actually have a certificate from a Bishop naming me a Catechist.

Elect me Pope and Day 1:

Excommunicate J.D. Vance
Place the United States under an interdict only to be lifted when the GOP is stripped of power
Defrock every "Traditional Catholic" clergyman
