Two black and white kittens on an Athens pavement near the First Cemetery. They are the gawky stage. One is out of focus in the background (see next image). The nearer one sits on haunches, black tail stretched out, huge black ears perked up, white forepaws extended, green eyes staring resolutely past the weirdo taking pictures, about to make a run for it. The second kitten is mostly black, with a white chest and muzzle, pink little nose. This one has been lying down, but like its sibling, has their huge ears at full extent and is simultaneously pretending I’m not there and preparing to flee.

A small, slender black and white kitten just entering gangly adolescence was taking a nap on this quiet street and looked up to meet me, front paws sphinx style, peering at me through one eye. I felt this baby wanted me to take them home, and I wished I could have. Large black Batman mask in which the missing eye-socket still seems tender, big ears, lopsided black splotched on mouth and chin, only a little white on face, a white chest and forepaws, one white, hare-like rear leg, black tail, the most endearing expression.

An elegant young calico with green eyes, white chest and paws, and ginger tabby and grey tabby markings, caught with one paw raised to walk away from me in the elegant neighbourhood of Kolonaki. The streets near Mount Lycabettus often have steps instead of tarmac as the slope gets steeper, and the side planting on these stepped pedestrian streets are home to cats. I have poked my head into her world and she looks startled.
