I love that Williams did his own disco CE3K, presumably to get ahead of Meco and make a mint. It didn’t catch on. Meco did an album of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Black Hole. I think the end of the trend is the disco cover of “theme from Star Trek 3,” which was on the main album.

Oh go on

DO IT AGAIN!

😂

e-scooter riders don't even care

One shot through a red light in Trongate one night, undertook a police van stopped at the lights, on an e-scooter lit up and flashing like CE3K UFO

Next seen surrounded by five cops in Albion St

🤣

This is a funny one as I think it was Disney Robin Hood when I was 3 and I had to be removed by my Mum as I was in floods of tears. I have no idea why. I think the next was the Jungle Book, probably when I was 6, which I loved. But it’s Star Wars and CE3K in 1978 that had the biggest impact
First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people!

Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :)

Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

I tagged out at the excruciatingly forced debate with the ex-nun(!).
The awful thing is that for all Spielberg's UFO obasession, his model of them is stuck in the 50s. No John A. Keel or Jacques Valleè High Strangeness... just nuts and bolts ships with aliens in. Old hat even in CE3K.

I wonder how well CE3K has aged with a lot of folks. It was huge back when it came out but nowadays the novelty has gone and the slow burn pacing can make it seek longer than it is.

Love it
Especially the ending of CE3K
And the refrain of Wishing on a star.

Always chokes me up

DD isn't a sequel; more a revisiting by Spielberg at a very different point in his life and career, in a world that has also changed profoundly in the nearly half-century that has passed. I actually rewatched CE3K to check my memories, and found it even more superior than I expected.

I bailed at the ex-nun argument about first contact. Fuck that shit. Would have been outdated in CE3K.

Grew up in San Carlos when there were 3 theaters in town. Was just talking with friend about riding bikes to Laurel Theater to see King Kong, Star Wars and CE3K.

Now live in Menlo Park and can walk to Guild for shows. Nice small venue

After four years, three weeks, and one day since the expiry of my contract with MPC (RIP Technicolor)...

...I can finally, FINALLY say this:

I'M NO LONGER UNEMPLOYED!!!

Steven Spielberg called me this morning. He said he had just finished reading Invisible College, regarded it as the best book on UFOs and wanted to quote it in the promotion for CE3K. (1977)

This means something. This is important. Well, to me it is. Still obsessing over this film…

Dull I found. CE3K or ET but without any warmth. Def not one of Mr S's finest.

ArtValt is live with new stuff! Read about the making of PITSBERG, an episode of Spider-Man, the CE3K movie comic, Armored Trooper Votoms, and don't forget my ongoing series The Last Blue Eagle! See all that and more RIGHT NOW!

Basically true, except for Spielberg: Spielberg's '70s theatrical releases included Duel (originally filmed for TV), Sugarland Express, and Jaws; his most optimistic '70s movie was CE3K, and even that has dark undercurrents of family abandonment and government paranoia.

'70s film was pretty gnarly.
What people don't understand is that with the exception of Star Wars, the Sting, and Spielberg, every movie in the 70s was gritty, dark, and often had a major character die at the end.

Also, how is Richard Dreyfus a callow puppy-fat child in this, a sea-buffeted academic in Jaws, and a broken midlife dad in CE3K, all within about 3 years?

wonder how many Amblin productions these people think are actually directed by Spielberg because the only ones he made that are directly comparable are E.T. (fantastical things happen in the suburbs, and by this rubric CE3K and WOTW at a push) and the Jurassic Parks, a 12th of his filmography
looking up Letterboxd reviews of The End of Oak Street and it must have been a rough few decades for guys like this who just always want Spielberg to cook with the same recipes from 1982
