My Filipina mother never says the word “rat”, “mouse”, or “rodent” in whatever language (English, Tagalog, Spanish, Cebuano, etc.). She always spells the word out or says “amigos” or “mga kaibigan”, both meaning “friends”. They supposedly overhear and get upset when they are called what they are.

Philippine languages such as Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Bicolano, etc are not dialects. Same with Chinese languages such as Cantonese, Hokkien, etc. Scots is a distinct language (not to be confused with Gaelic), not a dialect of English, though there is a Scottish accent and dialect of English.
What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?
