Former rugby star Joe Marler, known for his role in the BBC series 'Traitors,' is set to become the first celebrity participant in the BBC's 'Gladiators' show. The 36-year-old athlete, who previously competed in the first series of 'Traitors,' will be known as 'Mauler' in the fourth series of the popular entertainment program, set to debut in 2027. Marler's participation marks a significant milestone as the BBC aims to bring his 'power, personality, and surprises' to the show. Filming for the fourth series is currently underway in Sheffield, with the corporation highlighting Marler's reputation as a 'most entertaining sporting personality.' The show, which originated on ITV in the 1990s, features members of the public competing against elite athletes with distinct on-screen personas. Marler's inclusion aligns with the BBC's strategy to expand the franchise, following a successful revival in 2024. The series will also feature other Gladiators such as Nitro, Viper, Diamond, and Sabre. Additionally, a celebrity spin-off is in development, featuring personalities like AJ Odudu and Chris Ramsey. The announcement underscores the BBC's focus on blending sports and entertainment, leveraging Marler's popularity to attract audiences to the new series.
