This image of NGC 5468, a galaxy located about 130 million light-years from Earth, combines data from the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. This is the farthest galaxy in which Hubble has identified Cepheid variable stars.

Henrietta Swan Leavitt was one of the “Harvard Computers.” In the early 1900s, she discovered the relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars.

Her discovery gave astronomers a way to measure distances to galaxies and changed our understanding of the universe.

I'm thinking of releasing a special Halloween demo for my game.

Though maybe that might not be a good idea... a worst idea even.

VAR!

In the early morning hours #OTD in 1923, Edwin Hubble took a photo plate of M31 that showed a Cepheid variable star.

Using Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s distance-luminosity relationship, Hubble concluded that M31 is another galaxy outside the Milky Way. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

lifetime. Cepheid variables are a class of pulsating star, named for Delta Cephei in the Cepheus constellation. The relationship between a Cepheid variable's luminosity and pulsation period is quite precise. It had not been obvious to tell whether a star was dim because it was less luminous, 🧵3/

Stay tuned, we are hard at work on a Cepheid-based distance to this famous Seyfert galaxy! 🔭

That's just what I was thinking, larger errors than the Cepheid calibration of Riess et al, a thing I totally knew about before just now.
Latest results on the expansion rate of the Universe clearly point to … no clarity. The choice of stellar calibrator produces different results for H_0 & all have larger errors than the Cepheid calibration of Riess et al., which comes in at 73 km/s/Mpc, in significant tension with the CMB result. 🧪🔭

Henrietta Swan was an astronomer. She discovered that a strong direct relationship between a classical Cepheid variable's luminosity & pulsation period could be used for scaling galactic & extragalactic distance.

Her method was used to establish that the universe is expanding.

RS Puppis.
At a distance of 6,000 light-years, the Cepheid variable star was observed by Hubble and is one of the biggest and brightest known Cepheids in the Milky Way galaxy.

Amidst the April Fools' posts today, a serious #galactic paper about the movement of Cepheid variables in the Small Milky Cloud (SMC) by Satoya Nakano & Kengo Tachihara has found that the SMC is expanding in two different directions! ☄️🧪

Cepheid Variable Star in Galaxy M100
Image date: 26 October 1994, 19:00

This Hubble Space Telescope image of a region in the galaxy M100 shows a class of pulsating star called a Cepheid Variable. Though rare, these stars are reliable distance indicators to galaxies.

This night 102 years ago, Hubble discovered that there're stars outside our galaxy by observing a Cepheid variable star 1 million light years away

Until barely a century ago, no human ever knew whether there was more than one galaxy in the Universe. Think about that!

Hubble's identification of a Cepheid in M31 (left) was a big moment in astrophysics. I tried to find it in my image (right). I think I succeeded with help from here: t.co/YGaK8XCfnt Sadly, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, who discovered the period/luminosity relationship, is not mentioned! #astrophotography

Discrimination. Edwin Hubble was in charge of the Harvard Observatory. He determined how big the universe was using cepheid variable stars. Except it was assistant Henrietta Leavitt who discovered cepheids. As a woman she wasn't allowed to get a PhD or use the telescope or we might remember her.
