Ink drawing on 19.5 × 14 cm Hahnemuhle heavyweight printmaking paper. Original artwork. Though, it is ‘after’ Cézanne. But with lots of decisions by me.

Head of an Old Man (c. 1866) comes from the period when Cézanne carved portraits out of thick, ridged paint, using the palette knife to define the face. These early heads marked a bold technical shift that was only fully appreciated years later.

In Uncle Dominique as a Lawyer (1866), Cézanne dressed his uncle in black court attire against a pale ground — a contrast echoing Spanish Golden Age painting. This commanding figure shows Cézanne using costume and composition to heighten pictorial drama.

In Still Life with Curtain (c. 1895), Cézanne layers fabric, fruit, and pottery into a dense composition. The curtain frames the scene like a stage, giving the ordinary tabletop arrangement a sense of formal gravity traditionally reserved for history painting.

The Temptation of St. Anthony (c. 1870) is the first of three versions Cézanne painted across nearly two decades. Seen as a veiled self-drama, the series links the saint's struggle with desire to the conflicts that haunted the young painter himself.
