#chainsets
I wish I'd kept a log of the various wheelsets, chainsets, saddles, tyres brakes, bartape levers, guards cassettes, chains, pads etc. etc.
If I ever have to give up cycling, I'll hang the frame on the wall.

I had forgotten that they had that as one of the standard offerings. I went down the rabbit hole of triple chainsets.

Spa don't seem to have any chainsets or chainrings smaller than 24T. So I wonder if I should ask them to procure something else. In which case, what should it be?

The conundrum is that the triple chainsets at Spa Cycles have a minimum of 24T. If I've done the maths correctly, this means that the lowest gear (even with a 36T cassette) will be higher than it was on the hybrid with the old chainset.

This is not good.

Truly cannot recommend these cranks from Spa Cycles enough for a restomod build, this is the second one we've done with them. Design is based on vintage Sugino cranks, with a 165mm option! For 30 quid they're unbeatable

Happily Shimano chainsets work with SRAM groupsets - I'd never have kept the Apex kit on my crosser without swapping to a GRX 1x.

@Eorlingur For crank pullers, yes, But you try buying new octalink cranks / chainsets - they're like rocking horse shit.. So I need to swap the bottom bracket too, so I need a bottom bracket extraction tool.

Our shop wheelbuilder who has been at it for close to five decades and studied his trade with the Shimano family relatives, uses vegetable oil for spokecutting and chainsets. At the rate it has to be reapplied on a well-maintained bike, slight degradation hardly matters.

> I got a tubeless puncture from the get-go that the goop didn’t seem to fix. Trial run of the bacon strips! And a really bad chain suck episode that scarred the frame. That’s a design flaw in Shimano’s GRX chainsets. And I had to walk some hills on the way back, including the infamous >

I have such a combo on Campagnolo chainset which needs listing.
( having a clear out of stuff but selling chainsets/gear mechs etc doesn’t make much space. It’s the bikes that need to go.)

So, my bike shipped with 52-36 up front. Condor had run out of 50-34

Is it possible for me to buy a 50 tooth chainring and a 34 tooth chainring and just swap them over with maybe some tweaking to the front mech?

A not uncommon sight.

How do they put up with it?

I am not much of a gravel rider. But popularity of gravel bikes has definitely been of benefit.

And lower gears without the wider Q factor of MTB chainsets are kinder to my knees.

Quite happy with indexed shifting with my hub gear setup but genuinely miss friction on my other geared bikes. I've never used *top* tier Shimano groupsets, only up to XT or Ultegra level, and honestly I'm not impressed. Especially for double/triple chainsets.

Dozens of rims, 2 sets of hubs (Campag originally then Hope for the last 20 years or so) maybe 3 or 4 chainsets (Stronglight) but over 10 Chainrings, lots of BBs, the ergo levers (fitted when it was 15) have been rebuilt twice and its had 3 sets of hoods. 2 headsets, 2 stems, 2 bars, 2 rear mechs

It’s not all bad. Was talking to the fella who runs my local bike shop who will be able to retire earlier than planned because he’s making so much money off parents constantly taking their kids bikes to him to have chainsets and bearings replaced.
