Some real Zitron-haters on this app too, but they are mostly stupid kids who love their chatbots a little too much.

I've been shouting for a long time about how LLMs-as-search despoils our information ecosystem, which among other things puts our democracy at risk. Here is a very direct example of that:

We asked AI chatbots to make voter guides. They invented races and misidentified candidates.
Analyzing AI-generated voter guides for addresses in every county in the U.S. showed that the chatbots often made errors.

Chatbots are often quite good at retrieving the information you want from the web. But sometimes you’ll get better results by typing your query into a good old search engine.

Yep, you hate being duped into talking to a machine like its a real person, and you'll hate it even more when you are inevitably rude to a real person because you think they are just a machine. All chatbots should have to disclose up front that they are chatbots.

As many people have said, the more AI degrades college instruction, the more you'll see elite institutions respond to the demand for artisanal, bespoke old-school teaching as the rest of the world has to suffer with the chatbots
“At Harvard, students are clamoring for a class that assigns a hefty book a week, requires regular essays, bans digital devices. Humanities 10 drew 180 applicants for just 90 spots this fall. Students expressed urge to be forced to think for themselves in the age of AI."

First, the basics.

The US productivity uptick in AI-adopting sectors starts in 2020, not 2022. Even if you spot a new acceleration around 2022, that’s too early to be AI. Back then it was chatbots, not agents.
