Went fishing with my family today. We didn’t catch much but we saw this guy so I’m calling it a win.

Summer’s end means the start of a second pulse of activity as turtles are preparing for their long winter brumation. Eric gives us a peek into the field in the Hudson Valley of New York.

Brenlee Shipps has been scanning turtle skulls to understand the relationship between tomial anatomy and the hard anatomy of the skull. Here is a failed 3D print of a snapping turtle skull. It is a throw away, but a cool one. Bone texture is especially nice.

I had an AMAZING encounter this morning with a huge Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)!!!

It was moving between a pond and a small river 😍😍😍

It had a carapace about 35 cm long!!!

They are rarely seen here in South Florida ESPECIALLY out of the water… a first for me

It’s World Turtle Day! Here’s the skull of a common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). These prehistoric-looking freshwater turtles live in Canada and the U.S. Snapping turtles are omnivorous but they are also scavengers and active hunters

Timothy C. Roth, a member of Maryland's 'Task Force Turtle' (TFT) snapped this photo of a female common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) emerging from brumation in a dry lake mudhole with 18 lbs of dirt & grass on her back.

TFT tag these animals with radio transmitters to track movements.

I met this big old Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) on a track at the Carlisle Cranberry Bog a couple of days ago. Big but a bit of growing still to do. Really old ones are covered in vegetation with moss and weed growing on them. #Herping #Nature #Photography #Nikon #Massachusetts
